review: if you think Marvel’s tales of Thor hanging w/ an Iron Man, a green Hulk & a witch are weird, the Norse say, “Hold my mead!” w/ 8-legged horses, a world-encircling serpent, 1 chariot pulled by resurrected goats & another by cats

review: More effective is Arienne’s fight for freedom: from her life being controlled due to her magical talent, from serving the Empire even in death... All of these feel much more real, much more visceral, and much more compelling

review: themes are thoughtfully handled (& sadly relevant), delving into imperialism, propaganda, surveillance, class, gender, & identity. Sargassa has its flaws, but characters & storyline are strong enough that I’ll pick up book two

review: "As exciting as much of the action is, as thoughtful and moving as the themes are, and as enjoyable the ride is with our two main characters, my favorite element is the mythos that lies at its core"

review: An ambitious work with a thought-provoking premise, and if it didn’t fully carry through on that ambition, credit to Berry for the reach. Given the level of writing here, I look forward to what comes next. Recommended

review: If the fast-paced action will be to the liking of many a young reader, it’s also a barrier. The pace, combined with the episodic one-island-after-another structure, means we don’t linger in any scene or emotion for very long

@RobProvince “Gen. Stanley McChrystal, commander of U.S. troops in Afghanistan … said it was not uncommon for military award nominations to get lost in processing … Clearly it would have been more elegant to write that he had been recommended “

@RobProvince How do you not read to find out? “The general said he told Moore he & others had approved the medal, it was appropriate to include … and would be processed by the time his fellowship began … General Fenzel said he would resubmit the paperwork”
