Got a letter from the HOA yesterday Actual letter In an envelope With a stamp In 2026 The letter said my trash can was visible from the street for too long on collection day The fine is $50 I checked my Ring camera The truck came at 7:03am I brought the can in at 7:14am 11 minutes $50 That's $4.55 per minute of trash can visibility My therapist charges $250 an hour That's $4.17 per minute My trash can sitting in a driveway is now more expensive per minute than therapy I looked at the letter again It was signed by the HOA president Her name is Karen Of course it is I know this woman She lives four houses down She still has Christmas lights up It's March I know because I drive past them twice a day And because that's what I do I checked the HOA bylaws All 47 pages Section 4.2 says all exterior fixtures and lighting must be seasonal and removed within 30 days of the applicable holiday Her lights have been up for 97 days I went to the HOA meeting Tuesday night 7pm In a church basement Folding chairs Fruit platter that nobody touched Seven people showed up Four of them were on the board The other three were there to complain I was there to read My wife came with me She didn't want to But she said "if I don't come you'll end up on the news" I brought my legal pad Karen called the meeting to order She talked about community standards She talked about property values She talked about the importance of curb appeal From a woman whose Christmas lights are still blinking in March I raised my hand She said "we'll take questions at the end" I said "it's not a question. It's a point of order." She looked at me I opened my legal pad I said "Section 4.2 requires seasonal decorations to be removed within 30 days. Your Christmas lights have been up for 97 days. You fined me $50 for 11 minutes of trash can visibility on collection day while you've been in violation for over three months." The room was quiet One of the other three complainers said "he's right" The board members looked at each other Karen said "that's a separate issue" I said "it's the same bylaws" She said "we'll review it" I said "I already did. Page 12. Happy to share my highlights." My wife looked at the ceiling Some things never change Karen said "I think we should move on" I said "agreed. I'll move on when the Christmas lights do." Nobody laughed I wasn't joking I paid the $50 Because it's $50 and I'm not going to die on that hill But if the rules apply to me they apply to everyone So I filed a formal complaint about the lights With photos Timestamped Funny how surveillance works both ways The fine for seasonal decoration violations is $75 per occurrence She's been in violation for 67 days past the 30-day grace period I'll let her do the math Or I'll do it for her Because that's what I do Make common sense common again Plz fix. Two years ago, almost 0 schools were interested in even considering going phone free. Now, whole school systems are phone free. The rest are scrambling to get on board We owe @JonHaidt a tremendous debt of gratitude. What he achieved - this quickly - is almost unimaginable.

The Anxious Generation was published two years ago today, in a very different world. Back then, the most common objection I got was resignation: "The train has left the station." "You can't put toothpaste back in the tube." "It's how the kids connect today." Today, the world looks very different. It turns out that if our kids were all on a train and we learned it was heading toward a collapsed bridge, we'd find a way to stop it and bring them safely back to the station. That’s what’s happening now. After the historic verdicts in Los Angeles and New Mexico, today is a great day to reflect on the capacity of people in democratic societies to take action, even when opposing some of the most powerful corporations in history. We're getting access to the courts. We're getting phone-free schools. We're seeing whole neighborhoods letting kids out to play, unsupervised, which is what we older folk all remember as the best part of childhood. So I want to recognize: --The mothers (and, right behind them, fathers) who rose up by the millions and powered the movement. --The farsighted governors and legislators in red states and blue states who have been innovating on policy solutions. --The leaders of a dozen of nations, who are raising the age to 16 for opening social media accounts (with a special shoutout to Australia, for going first). --The teachers and school administrators who had their classrooms disrupted for 15 years, and who are now eager to think through new solutions as screens have taken over and obstructed learning. --The grassroots organizations who have been dedicating their efforts to advocate for all of the above in their local communities. --The millions of members of Gen Z who have been rising up, demanding agency over how they spend their lives in the digital era, and finding better ways to connect in real life. And one final group: the survivor parents--the ones you saw in those pictures of people embracing on the front steps of the LA courthouse. I have met many over the years. I am in awe of their courage and tenacity, their willingness to tell their stories of loss, over and over again, to different audiences, in the hope that no other parent would have to endure what they have endured. At long last, juries and legislatures are hearing you, and are acting. Together, we are calling the train back to the station. Together, we are rolling back the phone based childhood and reclaiming life in the real world. The work continues. If you’re not already involved, join us: anxiousgeneration.com/join

Sad day. I grew up listening to CBS Radio newscasts at the top of the hour on WCBS-AM in New York. It fed my desire to do radio news. That said, when I realized that ambition and made it to the "major leagues" as a producer for the NBC Radio Network, which by that time had be sold to Westwood One, we were almost literally talking to ourselves: only two of the top 50 affiliates aired the newscast we produced. They stripped the commercials and aired those so they could get their share of the revenue. And this was nearly 40 years ago, so it's unlikely the business model has gotten any better or more lucrative.

CBS News also is terminating its century-old CBS News Radio service, which serves approximately 700 stations variety.com/2026/tv/news/c…

I asked my teenager how much gas her car had and she said, “72 miles.” I guess phrases like, “ a quarter of a tank” are going extinct.

I remember a thread where a communist asked their followers what they would do once communism took over, and nearly every reply was some variant of artist or therapist. No one wanted to put in the years of training it takes to be an optometrist purely for the good of the collective. Unsurprisingly, there also wasn't anyone who wanted to work in construction, farming, sewer line maintenance, or any of those other dirty and dangerous jobs that people generally only do because the pay's good. They all believed they wouldn't have to work to keep society going because someone else would do it, and that someone else would do it just because they felt like it.

Don't you hate it when you and your buddy are trying to enjoy a beautiful day and, the next thing you know, you're getting busted for throwing homemade bombs at a protest? It's literally the woooooooorst.

So many of us live with analysis paralysis. Meaning, we wait to get going because we want the perfect plan first. But clarity only comes once you get started. You must accept that mistakes cannot be avoided, are part of the process, and are often the very things that teach you how to proceed. Or, as the great Napoleon Hill said, "Do not wait: the time will never be 'just right'. Start where you stand, and work whatever tools you may have at your command and better tools will be found as you go along." #MondayMotivation
