@jwrobertshaw It always makes me think: "Wow, this is like a more interesting timeline version of me!" lol
English

@billhd Ahh interesting! Thank you for sharing. Also, I was today years old when I learnt that you and others at MSU made Eli review! That's crazy. We've been using it in our writing program for years :D
English

@kristinarola all I can think of is JOLT! cola...and then I run away.
English

@mettalrose Of course that's been a major thread in my whole career. lol. But we try to sum it up in a tidy way (w/ evidence cited in a list of sources) here: elireview.com/2017/03/28/giv…
English

@mettalrose My answer to this is not to be the only, or primary, giver...but to work to build a robust feedback culture among the group. That also is bolstered by the evidence on learning that it is *giving* feedback that is among the most valuable things to do.
English

@bomani_jones The correct answer is always the Allman Brothers

@MereSophistry @SethLargo @DLib24 I would add that a fine version of "getting better" in my formulation is simply "making the sort of writing I will likely be doing easier, less stressful, more efficient"...all fine by me.
English

@SethLargo @DLib24 @billhd I think there is a lot to say about writing classes (i do not speak for literature or English classes, or the trees). A lot of writing pedagogy is tied to prestige models (see Anuj’s quote in this thread). AI makes legible some of the tensions of these investments
English

@SethLargo @DLib24 @MereSophistry I wasn't thinking of students so much as...most folks who have writing to do of some kind. I agree that student status *should* imply a desire to improve.
English

@DLib24 @billhd @MereSophistry If that's the majority of people, why keep English in the curriculum at all? For most students, their writing ability at age 18 is more or less set there for life unless they want to "be better." (Devil's advocate question of course.)
English

@MereSophistry @DLib24 Yes, I often juxtapose "wanting to be better" vs. "wanting to be done." Most people are in the latter group, understandably.
English

@DLib24 Totally. I almost said something about grading but its twitter

@CCguerilla @JonPiccini I recognize the three humps on the m from his jersey.

@CCguerilla @JonPiccini Pretty sure Shimp was on my baseball team in 3rd grade.
