Favouritism is the enemy of every manager. There are very few players in football you can afford to give special treatment to, players so good that everyone, from teammates to fans, know they can win you games on their own. Cantonas, Ronaldos, Van Persies. Those players are rare, and this current squad doesn’t have a single one. When young players see a senior teammate starting every single game despite being dreadful, missing penalties, costing points, and still being untouchable, they simply stop caring. Why should they give their all when they know no matter what they do, they will never get picked ahead of him? It's a natural human reaction to injustice. You simply cannot swallow it. But when a manager has the courage to bench a senior player for poor performances, everyone will work harder because the message is clear: nobody is safe, effort and performance matter. That is the problem with Amorim. Why should Mainoo improve? Why should he push himself? What is the reward for his hard work? A young player makes one mistake and is dropped the very next game. Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes can miss penalties, lose possession a hundred times, moan and sulk for ninety minutes, and still start every single match, even out of his best position.
