1/3 Today, an anecdote shared by an invited speaker at #NeurIPS2024 left many Chinese scholars, myself included, feeling uncomfortable. As a community, I believe we should take a moment to reflect on why such remarks in public discourse can be offensive and harmful.

1/x Never thought I’d share this kind of story. Was at @nycgov for a family gathering and on the NYC subway, I was *physically* and *verbally* attacked by a woman who punched my side with her fist and yelled at me, saying ching chong, dumbass, f*ck,

This study compares the campaign emails from Trump and Biden during the 2020 election. We found: (1) predominant emails (>95%) were for fundraising; (2) Trump was more likely to use strategic appeals in their fundraising emails; (3) Trump attacked more, and Biden acclaimed more.

When are #protests effective? There are two key lessons: 1) nonviolent protests are effective at mobilizing sympathizers to support the cause 2) disruptive protests can motivate support for policy change among resistant individuals.
Eric Shuman@EricMShuman

Really excited to share our new paper "When Are Social Protests Effective?", out in @TICS, which introduces a new theoretical framework for evaluating the effectiveness of social protest: tinyurl.com/mr4bd3sc
