Got one of those breathing purring toy cats for MIL, who would like a pet but real one too impractical. Think someone else has fallen in love

Dear All, It is with great sadness that we are letting you know that at 12.50 on 27/12 Jane stokes died (she would never let us use the word passed away!). As was her wishes she died in comfort, with loved ones at her side and with the sound of music in the background at St Wilfrid’s hospice, Eastbourne. Before she died Jane let us know that she did not want a public funeral but she was happy for a “friends get together” which is open to all. In memory of Jane, this has been organised for Monday 13th January. It will start with a non-religious memorial service, led by our hospital’s chaplaincy team, at 5.30pm at the Sanctuary room, level 6, Louise Martindale Building, Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton. This will be followed by drinks and a get together for people to reflect and chat about Jane. This will be from 6.30pm onwards at the Kemp pub, close to the hospital , where the back half of the bar has been sectioned off. 8 St Georges Road, Brighton BN2 1EB In her memory, a just giving page to raise money for St. Wilfird's hospice in Eastbourne has been set up. Both Jane and her partner Janet were cared for by the amazing team at St. Wilfird's. justgiving.com/page/janestoke… Please can you pass this message on to Jane’s friends and loved ones. With love Celia,Denise, mark and Rob (on behalf of all Jane’s friends and loved ones)

@DrRobgalloway Very true from all angles. Neither staff nor patients are served well in these circumstances . Was like that when I worked there in the 1990,s .

I'm an A&E consultant and I'm tired after a weekend of nights. But this am, I've handed over what I described as a "good department". This was said genuinely and with no hint of irony. We provided great care and have very short waits to see an A&E doctor, but I'd forgotten how unacceptable it was to have 18 patients in the corridor, and elderly patients waiting over 2 days for a ward bed. My lens of what is good and acceptable has been slowly warped by the slow & damaging effect of the working conditions of A&E departments up and down the country. My biggest worry is that I'm starting to accept the unacceptable. This is not about a lack of gp appointments, patients "abusing" the system or poor management - in fact we had excellent hospital management support, with patients boarding on each ward waiting there instead of A&E for a bed. This is a simple case of patient demand being greater than what the overall health economy can cope with. We have to either change the way we work, change demand via expectation management or increase resources. If not, then the unacceptable becomes the norm and that's unacceptable. Our patients and staff deserve better.

Funny how in cardiac theatres every single dorsum of the left hand seems to magically take a 14G cannula without issue all of a sudden

@guardian Just read your obituary - is there something wrong with being constitutionally unable to compromise your values ? Would have thought that was the benchmark to aim for ? Poor journalism G

It’s so hard to watch my lovely bright girl fade away completely. She still breathes but even the hand squeeze has gone now. Her life force is so strong but this is unbearable to watch. I’m scared that all my happy memories have been replaced by the trauma of the last few weeks

@Roseyanny @melbooth18 When I lived there ( rented GF flat ) I had a 40 ft marble tiled hallway and an enormous living room with a marble fireplace that was worth £15 k - we avoided touching it at all !

@melbooth18 @Roseyanny Built by Thomas Kemp who planned a succession of similar squares along the seafront , creating Kemptown, although the others didn't happen . Most are flats now but they are beautiful buildings. Even the basement flats are huge
