“We wanted to prove that greening can be done differently, without adding to the environmental burden,” Principal Dr. Ashok Kumar Das told The Statesman. At Asannagar Madanmohan Tarkalankar College in Nadia, 35 saplings this year were grown not in plastic packets, but in discarded coconut shells. The teachers noticed saplings like; mango, jamun, guava, ashok, kadam, bel and more, sprout naturally across the campus grounds. Instead of discarding them, the staff carefully transplanted 35 of these naturally grown saplings into discarded coconut shells, nurtured them for months, and then distributed them free to local residents. The vision is simple: grow trees without growing plastic waste. The mission is bigger — turn everyday waste into living forests, and make sustainability visible, practical and local. They aim to raise 100 such saplings next year.
