My TA orientation suggests to start classes with loud noises or flashing lights to get students' attention.
For the sake of those students, please don't. It's stressful or worse for those of us with neuro disorders, anxiety/PTSD, autism, and more.

Academic bullying is a major problem. After reporting my own abuse to the dean in my first grad program 8y ago, my bully was promoted and I was pushed to leave. I left science for years; my career is only now recovering. I am not alone. Neither are you.

@borjasotomayor @UChicagoScav 10 years ago for me (omg extra old) and I have no clue. Then again, I was a captain for 2 years and didn't understand half the references then either. 😅

Genuinely curious to know how many students will immediately get this reference in this year's @UChicagoScav list. Do kids nowadays even know about Parker and the buds?

Every department should have a faculty meeting focused specifically on what worked with remote learning and how to move forward. Remote learning was more accessible for many disabled folks & we need to act on this.

@BME_EDI @AcademicChatter Recording lectures and events whenever possible. Some of us have chronic health issues that prevent us from always attending synchronously, but we still want the opportunity to learn.

Let's start a thread: What changes can professors make right now (both in class and lab) to make STEM more accessible?

@borjasotomayor I have told Stephen more than once that my dream is to be the Borja of biology. That's got to be a compliment.

This kid is my new hero for coming up with "Newsy Things Considered". @petersagal better watch out or next we will have "Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me Unless It's About Dinosaurs!"

@ClaireZurn I hosted weekly review sessions at 5:30 - late enough that daily classes are over, early enough that people could get dinner afterwards.
I rarely could get people to come to "office hours", but if I made a couple slides and called it review it was popular.

Good for her, but this article just reinforces perceptions that women and minority groups shouldn't try to go into STEM unless they are prodigies, or have prodigious family resources.
This is not the only route to being a programmer or scientist.
