A spiritual barbell: combine techniques of self-transcendence with techniques of self-mastery.

When someone approaches me, the exchange inevitably starts with "have you read this or that theory? always very smarty pants & self-assured. I request a 3rd person life autobiography under 2 pages; reduce reading to 1 page per week and force a rewrite of that page to 2 lines max.

You think the pursuit of safety reduces anxiety. Actually, it nips potential in the bud. All potential lies in the uncertain spaces. The places you're trying to eliminate, pining online for the romanticised boomer life or whatever else.

Writing and reading words won't change you in any reasonable time frame. I don't think it will at all, in any meaningful way.

By default, we are being lived, we are not living. Unless you learn to interrupt the automated patterns in your thinking, you're just running deep presuppositions you never wrote. Or wrote before you knew better. This age calls for the work of dismantling and reordering.

Always I had trouble acknowledging it, have been forced to more recently...the degree to which our precious personalities are, more or less, entirely defence mechanisms and even complete fabrications, lacking any authenticity whatsoever...this always disturbed me

Fritz Perls correctly pointed out - unfinished business -we're often trying to resolve incomplete experiences without knowing it. Instead of actually finding a solution, we'll grasp at thyroid porn, 'health movements' or manifestation/nonsense esotericism etc as 'the real reason'

Some people I work with desire outcome without pain. Going to extraordinary lengths to discover novel ways of avoiding it. Magical thinking or positive thinking, optimism, divination, heart chakras etc. In essence, it's always a ruse to avoid confrontation with the unpleasant.

The human is at best at cosmic mollusc or bacterial-level development...the fact that any one of us past or present could stand up and speak about some kind of objective form truth is a truly laughable proposition.

Many people I meet not only can't distinguish between what feels good and what's useful, but are almost totally unaware that this distinction exists to begin with.

Alexander showed a surprising lack of interest in the pleasures of the flesh, though he was impetuous and bold in every other way. He greatly valued self-control and had about him an air of seriousness well beyond his years. It seems that the unrestrained passion and subsequent weariness of lovemaking deeply troubled the young man. As Alexander would confess years later, sex and sleep more than anything else reminded him that he was mortal.

@duncanreyburn Nietzsche almost singularly went to war with 2,000 years of Western philosophy and Christianity and all his critics can muster is "b-but he didn't have an articulated positive vision, all he could do is critique", while quoting Chesterton, the man with zero original thoughts.
