We are so hyped, this is our new game ... *drum roll* PVKK: Planetenverteidigungskanonenkommandant The game comes from a love of pressing satisfying buttons and a fascination of old cockpits. Mix that with a bit of escape room and "Papers, Please" and you got PVKK.

@Jonathan_Blow I can confirm - on Dome Keeper I designed the upgrades with negative effects, thinking it would be more interesting. Players did not like that and I changed to purely positive upgrades. It helped the gameplay flow easier, spending less time on an uncomfortable decision.

You don't need the negatives for balance. You can just balance the game for the positives, almost always. I think one reason this kind of design persists is it "feels smart" to design a game where You Have To Think About All These Tradeoffs, and players get to "feel smart" making the decision. But they don't actually feel that smart because they don't know what any of this shit does.

Statslike games are full of this kind of "get X bonus, but it also sucks for reason Y". I guess the ostensible reason is Game Balance but actually you don't need the negative. The game will feel better, and players' thinking much more clear, if you just do the positive part.

We got somethign pretty insane for @gamescom: a 2.5m wide, specially built controller for PVKK. It's essentially a real life replica of what you use on the game. It's all physical, high quality, making the joy of pressing buttons very real. We'll be at @IndieArenaBooth :)
