@birdchick and his shrinking apparatus went into overload. This sent Darren Cross into the Quantum Realm, which we saw in the most recent Ant-Man film. When Janet did it to stop a nuclear missile, she disrupted the guidance system and sent the missile into the ocean. This is now canon.
