Many don’t seem to understand this “blockade”. Trump is NOT blocking the entire strait. The only ships being blocked are ships attempting to leave/enter Iranian ports, namely oil exports. All other commercial ships will be free to pass. Trump is squeezing Iran, and simultaneously forcing the world to buy oil from us, while also securing the strait for safe passage for other commercial vessels traveling to/from other nations in the Arabian Gulf, like UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, etc. This is all around an excellent move, which is exactly why the usual suspects are so upset about it.

Iran’s exports are concentrated in three sectors: oil and gas ($50–60B), petrochemicals ($15-20B depending on how one defines it) and industrial metals ($12-14B). The latter two were affected during the war, although the full extent of the damage remains unclear. Oil exports, meanwhile, are highly vulnerable to maritime interdiction. A blockade of Iranian ports would target all three sectors, and more, by also restricting imports, creating input shortages that would feed back into reduced output. That said, the effectiveness of any blockade ultimately depends on Washington’s willingness to sustain it. Iran likely retains anywhere from a few weeks to a few months of input inventories, depending on the industry. The loss of Dubai and Persian Gulf route are very significant for Iran’s economy. Iraq, Turkey, Pakistan,Central Asia, and Caucuses routes can relieve some pressure, but not anywhere close to enough. However, using economic warfare tools requires persistence and endurance, even much more than military tools. The best outcome will emerge if we combine economic pressure, military strike, and information and political warfare and go directly for regime change.
