Nigeria has recorded a milestone in its oil exports with its first-ever shipment of Cawthorne crude to India, marking a strategic move to diversify crude grades and expand export destinations. The maiden cargo, estimated at 950,000 barrels, was lifted from the Niger Delta and delivered to Indian refiners seeking more flexible crude options. The development strengthens Nigeria’s position in the global oil market, particularly within the Atlantic Basin, while deepening trade ties with India—one of the world’s largest crude importers. It also reflects ongoing efforts to boost oil revenues, optimize existing assets, and introduce new crude blends, with potential for sustained exports depending on market demand and production stability.

Nigerian Senate Approves President Tinubu’s $6 Billion Loan Request The Nigerian Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s request for a $6 billion external loan to support key national priorities. The approval came on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, after the Senate considered a report presented by Senator Aliyu Wamakko, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts. The request was contained in two separate letters from the President read during plenary. Breakdown of the Loan - $5 billion - Structured Total Return Swap (TRS) external financing programme with First Abu Dhabi Bank, to be released in tranches. - $1 billion - Export finance facility from the United Kingdom, arranged by Citibank, specifically for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Lagos Port Complex and Tin Can Island Port. The facilities are intended for: - Supporting the implementation of the national budget - Funding priority infrastructure projects - Refinancing existing domestic and external debts - Meeting urgent financial obligations President Tinubu noted that the phased drawdown of the loan would help ease pressure on debt servicing. Additional Approvals The Senate also approved the issuance of naira-denominated federal government securities as collateral and the payment of margin obligations in U.S. dollars.

Vice President @KashimSM has charged members of the National Council on Skills (NCS), comprising federal ministries, state governments, and the private sector, to ensure that Made-in-Nigeria products and services remain synonymous with world-class standards. He urged the council to leverage the restless, inventive spirit of the Nigerian people, evident across streets, schools, and workshops, by tapping into this energy to power the nation’s ongoing industrial revolution. The Vice President, who gave the charge on Thursday while chairing the 8th NCS meeting at the Presidential Villa, stressed that as the council moves towards inaugurating the National Working Committee for WorldSkills Nigeria, the weight of the responsibility extends beyond preparations for Shanghai 2026. The 48th WorldSkills Competition, organised by @WorldSkills, will bring together skilled young professionals from across the globe.

PRESIDENT TINUBU’S SPECIAL BIRTHDAY MESSAGE   My dear fellow Nigerians,   Today, as I clock another year on the journey of life, I'm filled with joy and gratitude for the opportunity to serve this great nation. I want to take this moment to thank Nigerians for their messages, show of love and prayers on the occasion of my 74th birthday.  I thank all our citizens for their patriotism, solidarity and support for our administration.   To those who have taken space in newspapers or paid for air time on radio and television to wish me well, I thank you immensely.   I must thank my wife, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, for her kind and loving words. I also thank Vice President Kashim Shettima for all he said about me.   Consistent with my tradition of marking my birthday in line with the mood of the nation, I resolved to observe this year's birthday in a low-key manner.   As I mark this special day, I am reminded of the challenges we've faced since we initiated our reforms. I'm glad that our sacrifices have not been in vain, as we can see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, despite the temporary setback caused by the ongoing Middle East crisis.   The credit for the positive outcomes we have achieved does not belong solely to me, our Renewed Hope team, or our government. We achieved the gains together.   As we march towards the third anniversary of our administration, it is my deepest conviction that we shall succeed in building a brighter future for our citizens and future generations.   We are determined to confront some of the challenges we face today, and with your continued support, we shall overcome.   Let us continue to work together to build a stronger, prosperous and more resilient nation that will make Nigeria the pride of Africa.   Thank you all, and happy 74th birthday to me! Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR President, Commander-in-Chief of The Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria

Your message aims to be strong, but relies more on sweeping claims than balanced critique. Accountability in a democracy requires context, fairness, and accuracy. Fuel price and security issues aren’t isolated or simple subsidy removal addressed long-term fiscal strain, and security challenges need nuanced, sustained responses. Nigeria’s democracy, though imperfect, remains active with diverse voices, not a one-party slide. And that line about “as you celebrate your final year in office” says more about wishful thinking than political reality. Leadership in a democracy is ultimately decided by the people, not by carefully worded birthday messages or fragile alliances hurriedly put together. If anything, what we’re seeing is the desperation of emergency “lovers of Nigeria” clinging to a convenient coalition that lacks both coherence and staying power, one that, by all indications, is far more likely to collapse under its own weight than shape the country’s future. But of course, nothing says “constructive national engagement” quite like a birthday message dressed up as a doomsday broadcast.
Bolaji Abdullahi@BolajiADC

Happy Birthday, Mr. President, As you mark another year, Nigerians reflect on a presidency whose impact is now impossible to ignore. Under your watch, fuel prices have risen by nearly 500%, turning basic transportation into a daily calculation of survival. Under your leadership, Nigeria has climbed to 4th on the Global Terrorism Index, while thousands of lives have been lost to violence, families shattered, and communities displaced. Every hour, a Nigerian is killed by insurgents. Under your presidency, insecurity has not just persisted, it has adapted, expanded, and, at times, been met with language that blurs accountability, where those who terrorize Nigerians are referred to as “sons” and “brothers,” even as their victims bury loved ones. Under your leadership, the economic strain on Nigerians has deepened, the cost of living has surged, and the ‘Renewed Hope’ that you promised has turned to hopelessness for millions of Nigerian families. And under your watch, the political space is narrowing, raising real concerns about the steady drift toward a one-party state, in a democracy that was fought for with blood, sweat and tears. But birthdays are for reflection. So as you celebrate your final year in office, Nigerians can only offer a prayer, that this next year brings a sudden and unfamiliar miracle: that you begin to take governance more seriously; that you finally see the loss of lives under your watch as a failure of your leadership; and that you begin, at the very least, to act with the weight and responsibility of leading the world’s most populous Black nation. Wishing you good health, improved judgment, and a sense of responsibility to the people you govern. Happy Birthday, Mr. President!

2026 APC National Convention: As Eagle Square Beckons By Stanley Nkwocha As dawn settles over Eagle Square in Abuja, what gathers this weekend is not simply a political convention. It is something more consequential. As part of a series of activities to strengthen the All Progressives Congress (APC) and prepare for the 2027 general elections, the event will focus on electing a new National Executive Council, following nationwide ward and state congresses. Since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999, party conventions have often been moments of negotiation, consolidation, and occasionally rupture. However, this one carries a different weight. It comes at a time the country is attempting one of the most ambitious socio-economic restructuring in its post-independence history. For those involved in the internal workings of the APC, the exercise is neither ceremonial nor routine. It is a reckoning with a set of promises made under difficult circumstances, and an attempt to measure whether those promises have begun to take institutional form. Nigeria has been here before. In the early 1980s, under austerity. In the mid-1990s, under structural adjustment. Each period demanded sacrifice, but often without a clear social contract between policy and people. The present moment attempts something more deliberate. It seeks to restructure without losing political legitimacy, a task that has historically proven elusive in many developing economies. To understand the significance of this moment, one must return to May 2023, when the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office. The Nigerian economy at that time was constrained by a set of entrenched distortions. Fuel subsidies alone had consumed trillions of naira over decades, often benefiting intermediaries more than ordinary citizens. Multiple exchange rate windows had created arbitrage opportunities that discouraged productive investment. The decision to remove fuel subsidy was not unprecedented in Nigerian history. Attempts had been made under successive administrations, including those of President Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, both of which encountered strong public resistance. What distinguishes the 2023 reform is the simultaneity of actions. The unification of exchange rates occurred alongside subsidy removal, signalling a willingness to confront structural inefficiencies in a coordinated manner. The immediate effects were painful. Inflation rose, and the cost of living increased sharply. Yet, fiscal indicators began to shift. Government revenues expanded significantly, with increases exceeding nine trillion naira within a year. More importantly, the ratio of revenue to debt service, which had approached unsustainable levels close to total revenue, began to decline. For a country that had been spending nearly all it earned on servicing debt, this shift represents a critical turning point. Historically, countries that have successfully navigated similar reforms did so by pairing fiscal discipline with targeted social support. Infrastructure has long been a measure of state capacity in Nigeria. From the railway expansions of the colonial era to the oil-funded road networks of the 1970s, each phase of development has been marked by attempts to physically integrate the country’s vast geography. The current administration’s emphasis on large-scale projects such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Sokoto-Badagry corridor reflects a return to this tradition. These construction projects are attempts to redraw the nation’s economic geography by linking production zones to consumption centres and export routes.
