Very happy to be a part of this work out today in @nature. nature.com/articles/s4158…. Mosquitoes, long thought to be local creatures moving 1-2km in their lives appear to be able to move up to 295km in a night on high altitude wind currents!

#AVITI now enables cost-effective, high-quality #sequencing across a range of experimental scales. A diversity of assays and individually addressable lanes are now available for on-demand sequencing.🧑‍🔬 Talk to an Element Scientist to learn more: bit.ly/45xCsI1

Is dog behavior heritable? Yes! Are common behaviors associated with specific breeds? Not so much! @eenork breaks it all down for us at #AGBT23, and shares that her Darwin's Ark study of dog genomics using low pass sequencing for genotyping works great on the AVITI!

Our An. minimus pop gen paper is out! We whole genome sequenced ~300 An. minimus mosquitoes from Cambodia and found population structure, interesting signals of differentiation, and a lot of variation. nature.com/articles/s4200… Adapting the prev. thread, some main takeaways…

And for those of you in the US looking at that last chart and saying "what resurgence? everything seems fine here", here’s a closer look at what’s happening beneath the surface of that apparently flat trend. We’ve been here before, and I think we know what happens next by now...

@ProfDavidLSmith @lucytusting Yes I certainly agree, and looks like a great paper. I say it isn't "flashy" in the realm of gene drives, etc. that seem to get more coverage. I wonder how large-scale home improvement projects would be seen by funders.

reading various malaria documents that discuss having endemic malaria today despite spending ~$4.1B/yr, I always want to insert the comment, "Well, WTF did you expect? No one who understands malaria believes elimination would be possible without spending at least $10B/yr"

Last week we lost an extraordinary person and a fountain of mosquito knowledge, Siti Zubaidah, to Covid. Widely revered as “the mosquito lady”, Ibu Zubaidah was a crucial part of hundreds of malaria and mosquito studies across Indonesia and Malaysia, a phenomenal entomologist.
