Dr. Darlingtina Esiaka has seen the impact that Alzheimer’s has on families, including her own. When she was very young, her grandmother exhibited behaviors and symptoms that, at the time, her family didn’t fully understand and attributed to other things. But now, as an Alzheimer’s researcher, those experiences have given her a retrospective awareness.
Dr. Esiaka conducts community-engaged research in Black communities and witnesses the challenges associated with caring for those living with dementia. These experiences motivate her interest in uncovering insights that can lead to better care, earlier diagnosis and effective interventions.
As an #ALZFunded researcher, Dr. Esiaka feels empowered with an invaluable opportunity to contribute to advancing Alzheimer’s research. “It represents trust in my work and my ability to contribute ideas and solutions that could make a meaningful impact on individuals, families and communities affected by dementia.” #ENDALZ #BlackHistoryMonth
