We should be careful about getting carried away with "indoor" records. While 1:54.87 is incredibly fast, the use of specialized pacing lights (wavelights) and custom-designed tracks in Liévin makes these modern records feel a bit manufactured. We are increasingly watching "time trials" rather than actual races. When the second-place finisher is miles away, the competitive element is lost. It’s also worth noting that the outdoor world record, which has stood since 1983, is still nearly two seconds faster. Until Keely can touch Kratochvílová’s mark in a real outdoor battle, these indoor milestones are just highly-engineered PR moments for the World Athletics Tour.
