Ending homelessness takes dedicated people who know what resources are available and how to access them.

“Another successful Saturday breakfast! We had burritos which made everyone in the cafe happyyyy. 362 served. It was a busy morning, and we called 2nds about 15 minutes before closing. One last note, I had more folks inquire about our residential program.”

Erik wrote a referral for a man who needed a place to sleep. We’re grateful for our friends at CityTeam, a private men’s shelter that charges a small fee, for giving our staff emergency vouchers. This is what collaboration looks like.

Today, Blanchet House of Hospitality turns 74. In 1952, the line for a meal brought those struggling into view, making them hard to ignore. The line may look different now, but the reasons haven’t changed. Hunger. Hard times. A place where you’re welcomed without question.

The ribbon-cutting today for Bethanie’s Room was a testament to the power of community, hope and resilience. Emergency shelter for women and gender-expansive people has been one of the most desperate needs in our community, with only one same-day Portland city shelter available, leaving countless women to sleep outdoors and face constant risk of violence and exploitation. Bethanie’s Room - a joint venture between @blanchethouse and @rosehaven_pdx - will provide 75 same-day beds for women in a quiet, intentionally designed, trauma-informed space at 1015 NW 17th Ave. It will offer “rest, stability and a path forward, rooted in dignity.” This is the kind of effort Multnomah County should be embracing, supporting and expanding on (currently it has no shelters of this type, and in fact is cutting shelter). I was great to see Commissioners @BrimJulia Shannon Singleton and Meghan Moyer. Hoping expansion of this type of shelter will factor into their budget decisions. Because the County doesn’t need less shelter, it needs to do shelter better for less. Thank you to co-executive directors Steve Cook and Emily Coleman, the donors who stepped in to make this happen when local government wouldn’t, the peers and staff, and the County, state and federal elected officials who showed up in support. @RepDexterOR @RepBonamici @RepLisaReynolds

Imagine walking down the street hungry, broke, cold and soaked from the rain, and seeing the warm glow of Blanchet’s café ahead. You’re welcomed in, no questions asked. On nights like this, that light means a hot meal, a place to sit, and the relief of being treated with dignity

A woman in distress came to our door, wrapped in a blanket, injured, and overwhelmed. Blanchet House is where people turn in moments of crisis. A donor asked how this could happen. The answer was simple: we don’t question how someone got here. We help.
