Lots of blockchain gaming news this week with @TheSandboxGame @PlayWildcard @GAMEEToken 2:29 The Sandbox has announced standalone mobile battle royale game NEXT. 2:47 The Sandbox's vision for mobile has never been strong. This is a new start. 4:55 More important than the game itself, NEXT is a symbol of agency and urgency. 6:50 You have to log into NEXT with your The Sandbox account. Some NFTs are interoperable. 11:50 Wildcard's 100% community WC token goes live on Arbitrum on 26th March. 15:33 The question is whether Wildcard can attract enough players to start the WC flywheel. 17:23 AlphaTON has acquired 60% of Animoca's GAMEE Telegram gaming platform. 24:07 Animoca has partnered with Ava Labs to push Avalanche in Asia and Middle East. 28:40 Jon's been messing around with Stripe's AI agent-centric Tempo blockchain. 32:50 He's also got Claude Code to automatically set his tactics in Soccerverse. 37:38 But what happens to games when AI agents can play them better and faster than humans?

@0xferg I think the web3 framing is wrong. We will (have) increasingly see (seen) real money becoming part of games. Increasingly that real money will be handled by blockchain. Making crypto the focus of these games won't (and hasn't) worked.

The biggest and most obvious fumble of this decade will be thinking that adding web3 to games won’t make it x10 better for both the player and the game.

To be fair, they actually didn't raise that much money. The oft-quoted $203 million was pledges. Total funding was more like $20 million, split between NFT sales and VCs. The more interesting comparisons are Star Atlas and Illuvium, which raised - and spent - hundreds of millions, but are still operating.

Gentle reminder that having too much funding often leads to worse outcomes than having too little funding

🪦 AUTOPSY REPORT #5 > A fantasy MMORPG. Seven years of development. SEVEN. > Backed by the co-founder of Twitch, the lead designer of World of Warcraft, and Dr Disrespect. > In 2021, they ran a virtual land sale. 35,000 people applied. $203 MILLION in pledges. The plots sold out in six hours. > They ditched Unity to build their own game engine. The first one didn't work. Neither did the second. Or the third. Or the fourth. They went through FIVE custom engines before settling on one. > They also migrated blockchains. Three times. Polygon → Immutable X → Mantle. Every time, they asked NFT holders to move their assets to a new chain. > Game launched in early access in December 2024. > Reviews? "Zero substance." Missing features. Clunky mechanics. > Six months later, May 2025, servers went offline. > The token? Down 99% from its ATH. Market cap: $82,000. > The website now just shows a goodbye message. Discord shut down. Servers offline. Some people in the community called it a soft rug. Others say the team genuinely tried. Either way, 35,000 people pledged money for land in a world that no longer exists. Which game is this?

@GUNbyGUNZ "platforms are working through how ownership fits within their rules" is the obvious issue here.

For years, people said: “Blockchain games won’t exist on PlayStation, Xbox, or Steam.” Not because of technical limits, but because of control. GUNZ established itself on these platforms and did more than just launch a game. It set a precedent: > economies are taking shape within mainstream ecosystems > platforms are working through how ownership fits within their rules > this model is moving closer to viability at scale This is what “first” looks like. And first is never easy.

Personal update: I'll be joining the Supercell AI Lab with a new game I'm working on. Over the past months, I've been exploring if it's possible to develop games 100% by AI agents. Conclusion: IT IS VERY MUCH POSSIBLE. Will share some updates throughout the pogram, stay tuned!

Reaction to AI in games is worse than blockchain gaming Per David Kaye: “A Quantic Foundry survey of nearly 1,800 gamers found that 85% hold negative attitudes toward the use of generative AI in games. 63% chose the most negative response option available. The researchers noted this level of rejection is rare in years of survey work — worse even than the reaction to blockchain gaming, which is saying something”
