A perspective as a top creator in Rec Room I joined Rec Room 1.5 years ago to participate in their avatar cosmetics program I made lots of items (2000~) honed my craft, became the number 1 seller on the entire platform, met awesome creatives & talked directly with the team 1/?

@maxatrilian The creation process was one of the easiest ive experienced on a platform, their tooling was very robust & had great UI/UX. Naive mindset says more talented folk means more players/spend. but ultimately, who knows. they wouldve needed 100x top creators

@JaackTK I know that a % of people who experiment with hacking in videogames turn out to be talented gamedevs, so i hope they move onto something more productive! There are visual scripting options in game engines, blueprints in unreal engine are powerful, VRChat has Udon, which is close

@bluasis The worst part for me is I loved doing CV2 on Rec Room and it sucks I won't be able to do that now. I didn't really play much and I was discouraged to make a full room by the hackers tbh. I honestly think the hackers killed the game and I wish the worst on all of them :)

@JaackTK I think transitioning your talent towards a more proper game dev environment (RRS) was probably a good plan, but unsure if RRs demographic are actually interested in that. Hackers are a problem on all platforms, RR certainly had its issues with em, yeah.

@bluasis Yeah I 100% agree with what you said. Expanded too quickly, focus on the wrong things, etc. The hackers ruined the experience, the lag ruined the experience, the slop like AI didn't contribute. I'd also argue RRStudio for making games wasn't needed (although it had potential)

@DavidSHolz Love VRC! created on the platform for 7 years, its not perfect, tools require more tech knowledge than other platforms but it allows us to make much more interesting art&functions as a crash course to Unity gamedev Focus for the last 1.5y has been RR, so im a bit behind on VRC

Yes I think a FOSS/Blender like project would actually work best, perhaps coupled with AI coding to bootstrap and maintain the project itself with very low people overhead, very very cheap servers to maintain, and perhaps AI as an optional enabler for creating worlds and assets. Basically lots of things to allow a FOSS non-profit to scale the way a traditional corporate company would have in the past but via volunteerism and community spirit, with a dash of AI.

@ScottSPY300 Sorry, I'm but a lowly independent artist. I wish I could have saved the game! Truthfully there isn't much like it other than Roblox.. my real suggestion would be to keep them away from exclusively online games, there are a lot of great co-op and single player games out there!

For some background, ive primarily been a VRChat creator since the early days of VR, i made some of the old default row avatars, (that no-no brush meme avatar too, yes) i went over to Rec Room for fun & didnt expect to be caught up in a whirlwind.
