Out now! "Studebaker ignites a necessary conversation about the intertwined nature of legitimacy and ideology. For those concerned with the future of embedded liberal democracies, this timely and insightful book serves as a warning against complacency." - @enzoreds

Coming with @EdinburghUP in November! Democracy as a hydra in a tar pit Burdened by an excess of narratives, it is weighed down by the very means of its survival

I feel as though this observation from @BMStudebaker is important and generalisable. Both left and right have created situations in which their extreme flanks are artificially amplified, giving the impression that they are much more popular than they actually are.

I am spotting the hallmarks of LLM prose in articles published in major outlets, shared by reputable people It's now completely pointless to read op-eds and thinkpieces, the accessible middlebrow essay is in shambles

I had a very engaging conversation with Cambridge Political Theorist @BMStudebaker about Immigration, Iran, and his fascinating concept of "Vulture Socialism" (Link to the full 1-hour video in the replies)

@nukedwest While exports are, of course, part of the picture, they have been dramatically overemphasized for years in Germany, and that's why the German economy is more sensitive than it should be to manufacturing competition

@nukedwest Germany needs to adapt to this situation rather than try persist with a retrograde strategy Making German workers work longer hours to produce marginally more, e.g., automobiles, just limits their capacity to participate in the consumer economy

German workers are 4 times more productive than Chinese workers, but the chancellor thinks he can use the spectre of bipedal robot choreography to scare people into accepting the cancellation of the future It won't be that easy The dream of the 90s is alive in Millennial hearts
Clash Report@clashreport

German Chancellor Merz: We are simply no longer productive enough. Each individual may say, “I already do quite a lot.” And that may be true. But when you return from China, ladies and gentlemen, you see things more clearly. With work-life balance and a four-day week, long-term prosperity in our country cannot be maintained. We will simply have to do a bit more.

@mmue_pungmu But this is a mistake everyone is making - there's a lot of threat inflation going on w/regard to China, and this is producing an overemphasis on manufacturing w/an eye to defense spending, at the expense of the wider economy & the standard of living

@BMStudebaker However, the discussion in Germany is about the manufacturing industry, which has long been the strength of the country and is now declining. Ironically, Germany was ridiculed for its industrial base by countries that now desperately want the manufacturing industry back.
