Your next Christopher Nolan movie will be on Netflix. He has spent years trashing the company, calling their strategy "pointless," refusing to work with them. But the studio he moved to, Universal, already signed a contract to send every one of its films to Netflix. The Odyssey, Nolan's $250 million adaptation of Homer's epic poem starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, and Zendaya, opens in theaters July 17. It is the most expensive movie Nolan has ever made, and the first feature film in history shot entirely on IMAX 70mm cameras. He built this thing specifically so you would go see it on the biggest screen possible. After theaters are done with it (roughly four months), The Odyssey goes to Peacock, NBC's streaming service, for four months. Then it lands on Netflix for a 10-month exclusive window. This is not a rumor or a prediction. Universal and Netflix signed this deal in October 2024, and The Odyssey is on the list by name. I looked into how Nolan ended up here, and the timeline is kind of funny. He spent 18 years at Warner Bros. Made 10 films there. Batman trilogy, Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet. Then in December 2020, Warner Bros. decided to release its entire 2021 movie slate on HBO Max (their streaming app) on the exact same day those films hit theaters. Nobody told the directors first. Nolan called HBO Max "the worst streaming service" and walked. He took his next movie, Oppenheimer, to Universal. Oppenheimer made $977 million at the box office and won Best Picture at the Oscars. But Universal was never a streaming-free zone. Nolan just traded one streaming partner for another. Warner Bros. sent his films to HBO Max without asking. Universal sends its films to Netflix by contract, with a few months of theater time built in as a buffer. The timeline got stranger this year. Netflix spent late 2025 trying to buy Warner Bros. outright, the whole studio, for $82.7 billion (roughly what Apple is worth in a single quarter). That deal would have put nine of Nolan's older films, including the entire Batman trilogy, under Netflix's roof. Nolan, who became president of the Directors Guild of America (the union representing film directors) last September, told Variety he had "very, very significant concerns" about the takeover. Netflix ended up dropping out in February after Paramount outbid them. So Nolan refused to work with the studio that put his films on streaming without asking. Moved to a studio that puts every film on Netflix by contract. Even emailed Netflix's head of content an apology back in 2017 for trashing them, calling what they built "revolutionary." The $250 million IMAX movie he designed for the biggest screen on the planet will be sitting in the Netflix library by early 2027. Netflix will have his movie by early 2027. Nolan just negotiated a four-month head start.
