The County Won’t Pay. So I Will. I will not name the shelter. I will not name the woman who called me—the director of a government-run animal shelter drowning in crisis. If I did, she would face consequences for doing what’s right. For standing up in the face of a broken system. Her shelter is at capacity. Dogs being kept in offices, cats stacked in crates, and crammed into every available space. The cycle of dumping, surrendering, and abandoning animals continues, and still, she refuses to euthanize them to make room. Instead, she organized a rescue in Maine willing to take in some dogs—she called me to ask how much I would charge to transport them. I asked: what’s your budget? She told me there was none. The county won’t pay for this. If these animals are going to make it to safety, she will pay for it herself. But she will not pay for it. I will. I will absorb the cost, because this—this is absurd. No one should have to sacrifice their livelihood to save a life. This system is failing the very people trying to save these animals. I offered to help raise funds. She told me the harsh truth: donations made to the shelter don’t benefit the shelter. They go straight to the county. The people running the shelter see nothing. They have to beg the community for gift cards, Amazon wishlists, and scraps just to provide the basic care these animals need. This is not a broken system. This is a designed failure. This is happening across this country—town after town, shelter after shelter. So while I will do what I can, and I will cover this transport, the question remains: What will we—as a society—do to change this? Because if we continue to look the other way, if we keep tolerating a system that starves shelters and forces the people fighting for these animals to bleed for them, then we are complicit in this cruelty. Don’t just be angry. Do something. Call your local shelter. Demand transparency. Hold your county commissioners accountable. This is a fight worth having. And if you want to see change, you must be part of that change. These animals deserve better. The people fighting for them deserve better. And so does the system. But we are not waiting for the system to change. We are going to save all the dogs (and cats too).
