@Mr_LB_WSO @dylanwiliam @MarilynLeask @TPEAssociation Which "IT packages" would you suggest training students in? How can you predict the relevance of said IT packages for the students? Seems like an expensive gamble to get students to learn tech that may or may not be soon obsolete.

Perhaps it is worth looking over the longer term - so many jobs require competence in the use of various IT packages. We don’t ask if pencils raise achievement - technology is a modern day work tool @TPEAssociation

Cross-sectional analyses of PISA and NAEP data suggest little or no overall relationship between technology use and student achievement: bit.ly/2RhROeD. We need to stop asking "Does technology help?" and start asking "When does technology help?"

@MarilynLeask @TPEAssociation Happy to consider any evidence that shows that the use of information and communications technology improves anything worthwhile, though I personally don't think that schools should be training students in the use of IT packages.

@dylanwiliam Also, this is only an issue with testing. Other forms of assessment clearly benefit from the use of digital technology.

@dylanwiliam Would learners have done better in the tests if they could use digital technology while being tested?

Offering recorded lectures doubles rate of non-attendance & reduces student learning. Interestingly, even if students actually watch the videos, they still do worse. link.springer.com/article/10.100…

The real digital divide is not between those who have, and who lack, access to high-speed internet. It's between children whose parents restrict screen time and those who don't: bit.ly/2ED8VDX
