That is one of the most absurd birdies I have ever seen.
I do not agree with that rule or ruling and the R&A should be ashamed of what they just allowed to happen at this point in the tournament.
There is no way of actually knowing if a ball ended up in the TIO area if you don't find the golf ball.

I think we can infer from Rory's comments today — and tweets by a handful of others last night — that a lot of players were not happy last night that the R&A delayed sending out tee times for so long while Bryson's penalty was sorted out. "To hold the tournament hostage like that, and to have all of us, players, volunteers, everyone waiting on him to depart, I didn't feel like it was a great look," Rory said.
