@afneil Does your destitute country have enough fuel for your “Typhoon jets”?

The Falklands are now defended by a substantial and well-armed British garrison, Typhoon jets and the formidable Sky Sabre air defence system. Plus provision for rapid reinforcements. None of that existed in 1982. There’s no way Argentina could just ‘walk in and take over.’
𝐍𝐢𝐨𝐡 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐠 🇮🇷 ✡︎@NiohBerg

Britain could lose the Falklands because of weak leadership. It's not the 80s anymore, there's no Thatcher in charge and the UK is a depressing shell of its former self. If Argentina simply walks in and takes over, possibly soon with Trump's approval, what exactly will Keir Starmer do? Send an angry worded letter? Would he even care at all?

🗣️| Nigel Winterburn: “There’s that pressure that Arsenal haven’t won the league in over 20 years and the players know because of the talk around the club and the history. Do I care how we win the league? Absolutely not? Would I want to see 4-5 goals every game? Of course I would but if that means we’re also losing a lot more games then no. “In my career I played at Wimbledon? Long ball. George Graham? Strict orders and set up of a team. A bit like the current Arsenal team. I’ve also played under Arsene Wenger who was a bit more open and played with a lot more freedom so I’ve played in all of the styles and on the eye you would go Wenger style is better to watch. But as a player if you can guarantee me to win the Premier League and the Champions League then I would take that. We didn’t do that. “We won the Premier League and the FA Cup double which for me was absolutely amazing. It’s difficult for me because I’ve won things with different styles. This season if this way gets us over the line then why would I criticise it? I want to see Arsenal as Premier League champions. “I can’t take all the nonsense of set plays because if you divide the set play goals by the open play goals there are other teams that have scored a higher percentage of set play goals. I’m not having the criticism because what’s happened is the bandwagon has been jumped on by people that don’t support Arsenal but every Premier League game from a corner is the same. “Don’t tell me one team does it and the other 19 don’t. Don’t tell me other teams don’t crowd around the goalkeeper and put 7-8 players in the six yard box. They all do it because they know it’s a way of causing chaos and creating chances to score goals. They don’t want to be left behind. It’s the same way a player might get touched in the box and they go over. Don’t tell me one team does it and the other 19 don’t. They all do it. If they feel contact they go over. That’s why you’ve got to push all that aside.” [@aceodds] #afc

🚨 BREAKING: An Independent Commission has handed Chelsea a £10.75 million fine for breaches of the Premier League’s rules relating to Financial Reporting, Third Party Investment and Youth Development under Roman Abramovich. Chelsea has been sanctioned by the Premier League with an immediate nine-month Academy Transfer ban and a suspended one-year first-team player transfer ban (suspended for two years). Chelsea has accepted both sanctions which come as a result of the Premier League’s investigation. It was established that between 2011 and 2018, undisclosed payments by third parties associated with the club were made to players, unregistered agents and other third parties. The Premier League say Chelsea “has accepted, among other things, that the making of these payments, as well as the failure to disclose them to the League, constituted a breach of the requirement to act in good faith towards the League.”   Self-reporting by Clearlake-Boehly was considered when assessing the severity of the punishment. A separate FA disciplinary process involving the club’s alleged breaches of FA Regulations arising out of similar conduct remains ongoing.

On this day in 2013, the great Tony Gubba passed away. Here’s the Football Focus tribute to him shortly after his death, beautifully narrated by his long time friend and colleague, Gerald Sinstadt. Gubba was such a brilliant commentator and broadcaster.

The British say "Russia isn't achieving its aims" after 4 year of fighting a 500k man NATO trained army backed by 55 countries militarily and economically? It took the mighty British army 38 years fighting the 2,000 men of the IRA in Ireland before going home without a victory

Now that my 29 post mega thread on Op Flavius is completed, I have the fun of editing the old Op Flavius 'Road to Gibraltar' blog posts and stitching them together into a single 'one stop' blog post that hopefully makes sense. The fun never ends. My cup runneth over. And yes, that single blog post will be quite long. I have decided to embrace that idea.

The Disneyfication of terrorism. Edward O'Brien was an IRA terrorist, killed in 1996 by his own bomb, whilst he was engaged in an act of terrorism. His bomb contained Semtex plastic explosives. It exploded prematurely whilst he was on a double-decker bus in London. O'Brien, as with so many other terrorists, didn't give a damn about the people around him, the people he was knowingly endangering, whilst carrying a bomb in a public place. His fellow IRA terrorists regularly transported bombs, including van bombs containing a tonne or more of explosives, through heavily built up areas, full of people. The explosion killed O'Brien the terrorist. It also injured the other passengers and people in cars that were adjacent to the bus. The bus driver lost his hearing. That's the truth about the IRA terrorist named Edward O'Brien. He wasn't a patriot or a hero and he's not a martyr. He's just a dead terrorist, killed by his own bomb, whilst fighting for a "cause" in an "armed struggle" that his leadership had long before realised was doomed to fail.

New Blair documentary out this week on channel 4. To some he’s the architect of New Labour. To others, the man who marched the UK into a needless war in Iraq. Few divide opinion like him. Admirers will tune in for vindication. Critics for accountability. Will you be watching?

@BlackScarfMarc I am a Liverpool fan and I can safely say "we were shite!" No PGMOL was against us. No PGMOL was referring the game in a way to try and stop Arsenal winning the league. Why do you always have to rely on other teams to win it for you anyway? Losers!!

Getting a real Déjà vu feeling this season, compared to the 1991 run-in. There was a real anti-Arsenal feeling in the media as we’d become real challengers to their darlings, Liverpool. The FA also deducted us 2 points resulting in the George Graham team talk “There’s one way to handle it: just keep winning matches”. We ended up winning the league by 7 points despite having 2 deducted. Remember the front page of the first @GoonerFanzine the following season saying “CHAMPIONS. Stick your 2 points, we didn’t need them anyway”. Again it’s a real them & us feeling. Despite being up against a state backed juggernaut that’s helped shit all over the game and its rules, we have fans of other clubs rooting for them over us. Pathetic. As the song says, “Fuck em all”. We are The Arsenal. 🖕🏽
