Simple truths about city planning & transportation. When I'm not engineering safe & healthy streets, I'm running my mouth about it.

It's interesting how often reply-guys insist that people who sometimes use bikes to get around want to ban cars. And then they turn around and say "It’s time to ban cyclists."

@Boenau Anti-car zealots believe paint and plastic on limited road estate somehow bestows territorial rights and entitlements. The space allocation is whack. < 3% of all trips in NYC are on bikes while bike lanes eat up 25% of paved roadway. It’s time to ban cyclists.

@mliebow Which point remains? That 25% of New York City road space is set aside for people riding bikes?

@Boenau Point remains. The incidence of bike usage remains pitiful. 1500 largely unused miles of roadway is wasted space. Fact remains — bikes chew into roadways meant for buses, cars and trucks. The fantasy people will suddenly adopt bikes in all forms of weather and need is ridiculous.

25% of a city's paved roads dedicated to people riding bicycles would be amazing! May all of our cities reach that goal. 😎

Cities in northern Europe don't have bike lanes (or a bike culture to speak of) because of snow. 🤡
Sunshine of the Midwest@nothanksnopeyno

@wonka_cs @ontologyofRouge @Boenau Protected bike lanes would cost us in my area a ridiculous amount to plow in the winter. Cities with snow are already struggling just keeping roads open for emergency vehicles and busses. If we take away the cost of extra paint and barely used bike lanes, it would benefit all.

An e-bike can change your life! 😎
Luke Jaywalker@LukeJaywalker28

@Boenau I spent a good amount of time talking smack about e-bikes initially. After my first test ride, I was radicalized. Some of the most fun I’ve had since I was kid. And now how 1000s of kms on the bike. Truly the gateway.

@mliebow Disingenuous? You were talking about an entire city, not a street here and there. This is what you said: "The space allocation is whack. < 3% of all trips in NYC are on bikes while bike lanes eat up 25% of paved roadway."

@Boenau Don’t be disingenuous. On roads that got bike lanes, those lanes eat up 25% of the paved roadway width — usually a 6-foot bike lane next to 10-foot car lane. So on those specific streets, yeah, the space allocation looks whack with the tiny overall bike usage.

"Let's ignore the thing that causes so much death and destruction and instead talk about this other thing that hardly hurts anyone." Every day. 🤦‍♂️ Still, I love this site.

@Boenau Come walk around my city with me and I'll gladly show you many instances of "bike brain". Yes, they pose less (but much more than non-zero) safety risk to others, but assholes will be assholes regardless of their mode of transportation.

@scruffyy90 @Boenau Yeah, he somehow popped onto my feed today and after seeing 5-6 of his posts now, it is all clearly just variation on the same dim-witted theme. I have adjusted his place in my algorithm accordingly.
