Victoria Villarruel is correct on one fundamental legal point: the Falklands/Malvinas issue is, above all, a dispute between states. The United Nations has never recognised the islanders as a «colonised people» in the classical sense of decolonisation, nor granted them the exclusive right to determine the ultimate sovereignty of the territory. From that perspective, the dispute remains bilateral, between Argentina and the United Kingdom. For many people in Britain, the matter appears settled. The Falklands are British, the islanders wish to remain British, and the question seems closed. Yet this certainty is not shared universally on the international stage. The United Nations continues to regard the sovereignty issue as unresolved and has, for decades, referred to the existence of a dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom. In other words, while British administration is a reality, the legal argument itself has never been unanimously accepted worldwide as definitively concluded. However, I believe there is a political and human nuance that should not be ignored. The islanders cannot simply be treated as a secondary detail or an inconvenience within a diplomatic file. They have lived there for generations, possess their own identity, customs and a way of life markedly different from that of mainland Argentina. To deny this would be as unproductive as denying the existence of the dispute itself. Sovereignty may be discussed between states. Future coexistence cannot. This is perhaps where the real Argentine challenge begins: maintaining the sovereignty claim without turning the current inhabitants into inevitable adversaries. Whether one likes it or not, any peaceful settlement will ultimately need to include them. There is an obvious cultural distance between kelper life and Argentine life. That distance will not be reduced through slogans or uncompromising rhetoric. It can only be narrowed through guarantees. Argentina should think in terms of an extraordinarily generous proposal, one capable of offering legal certainty, local autonomy, preservation of customs, institutional continuity and economic protection. The islanders must know that an eventual Argentine sovereignty would not mean losing their identity or seeing their way of life abruptly transformed. The Falklands issue will not be resolved merely by asserting historical rights. It will also require the construction of trust. And in matters such as these, trust can matter just as much as legal arguments.
