Repping my East Belfast GAA gear here mind you 😊

@niamh_journo You’ve every right to say and write what you like Niamh, although it shows along with other pieces that you’re a nationalist activist disguised as a journalist. You were never going to support Jamie’s points, especially when you wear GAA clothes and support the GAA yourself.

Delighted to see this When we first started the club lots of people giving advice. Truthfully, most were unburdened by knowledge But a small number stood out straight away. You could feel their authenticity, passion and integrity Linda was one of those people

President Catherine Connolly has named Linda Ervine, a sister-in-law of the late Progressive Unionist Party leader David Ervine, as one of her seven nominations to the Council of State. She also included two Professors from Queen’s University, Belfast rte.ie/news/politics/…

@BelTel Too much of our politics is empty rhetoric without delivery. On the pitch that approach gets found out very quickly. Could leaders from sport bring a different type of leadership into politics?

I fully support this from our neighbours and friends at Bredagh People are sick of weird culture wars that deliver nothing for anyone Issues get framed as debates about green spaces or concert venues but it’s clear as day what the real problem is...

Belfast GAA clubs need 5× more pitch hours. Restoring the Lower Botanic pitch will support thousands of young people while protecting biodiversity along the Lagan. Sport, community and climate action together. ✍️ c.org/SqcGsBxX4F (no donation required select share)

Something people don’t seem to realise is that if a pitch doesn’t go there, it will likely come at the expense of under-utilised pitches elsewhere in the borough Strategic thinking matters
Belfast Live@BelfastLive

A petition to stop Botanic Gardens meadow and community garden being dug up for a GAA pitch has received 350 signatures in two days, as locals continue to criticise what they consider to be underhand decision making by Belfast Council. belfastlive.co.uk/news/belfast-n…

Has anyone actually thought about what it’ll be like with a riot at the balls, a Linfield or NI match kicking out and GAA at the other end of the road on the same night. As much as I’d love us to all get on I’m not sure they’ve thought this through 😬

A plan for two new GAA pitches and a soccer pitch at Boucher Road Playing Fields will go ahead, after Belfast Council voted through measures which will involve searching for locations for a new large-scale open venue belfastlive.co.uk/news/belfast-n…

@GaelicStatsApp @andyirishnews I'd take them in the East! Ultimately, it doesn't really matter until pitch strategy is released. If 2 pitches don't go into Boucher then they'll be going somewhere else and I hope it'll be where the greatest need is

@andyirishnews @bonzodave Would I like it … yes Is there a need ? Not really in that area Will Antrim GAA success rate on the pitch improve because of it? No Is the absence of the pitches over the last few years anyway connect to Antrims failure? Absolutely not

@andyirishnews it would be very difficult to put the chronic and generational failings of Antrim on the field down to facilities West Belfast must have 22+ GAA pitches The population potential in Antrim is again not a reason for Antrims failings

@bonzodave @andyirishnews I would honestly say it’s completely unrelated. So far removed you might as well suggest the weather is the reason Antrim underperform As mentioned there are a lot of pitches where the majority of GAA clubs operate and a lot not connected to a club are underused

@GaelicStatsApp @andyirishnews Thing is if you stick a pitch in west then north/east might not get one as there is a finite amount of capital money to spend every year North and East is were the greater need is and the pitch strategy needs to reflects this

@bonzodave @andyirishnews They also given up a potential GAA site to allow feile to have its festival there plus they have the site beside la Salle school which is managed by the school (not sure if school bought the land or its council)

@GaelicStatsApp @andyirishnews Must be a new fence. The only time slots avail in Belfast is 9pm at woodlands, I'm guessing falls is booked solid? Lack of pitch space doesn't mean people aren't transferring clubs, it means they stop playing or go play diff sport that doesnt have the same pitch space issues

@GaelicStatsApp @andyirishnews Falls grass pitch isnt safe to use most of the time as there isnt a fence around it The lack of pitch provision in BCC and Lisburn Castlereagh is stifling development and offers terrible value to rate payers

@andyirishnews North belfast I understand the issues regarding facilities but where the majority of GAA clubs are based (West) it’s not a significant issue Look at falls Park, Council run pitch under used by GAA Unless GAA generally have ownership ora lease agreement council pitches fail

If GAA pitches don't go to a place with no pitches then they'll go to places with pitches meaning other sports will lose pitches Proof of need matters, nothing else. That's why when a GAA pitch didn't go in at Victoria Park it went to Henry Jones and 3 soccer pitches went

"So what happens now? More talking, the can is kicked down the road and a range of alternative proposals are being looked at. "In a grown-up world, the solution to the issue would be obvious – build Casement Park and bring the concerts there. Typically, Casement and Boucher Road plans have been met with the same opposition." Read Andy Watters: tinyurl.com/y92nnajs

Why don't the GAA relocate the stadium to somewhere like the Mackie's site, Titanic Quarter, or even East Belfast beside Stormont Estate or Shandon golf club? Belfast City Council could fund the project as a stand alone business venture using council funds, and especially if it included residential high-rise buildings that generate domestic rates to help cover the costs. And, if they go the extra mile to include state-of-the art biomethane power generation to turn human waste into electricity and process it into recycled pellets incorporating waste sawdust from construction of modular buildings, prawn shells from Kilkeel, and mushroom waste from Tyrone, then this could be sold on to horticulturalists and garden centres in England to help pay for the project.

“Having spent well in excess of £20m already with nothing to show for it, Ulster GAA appear willing to spend hundreds of millions on a stadium that’s neither wanted nor needed." Tyrone chairman Martin Sludden has called on Ulster GAA to scale back its redevelopment plans for Casement Park and build a more modest stadium appropriate to the needs of the GAA in Antrim.
