AN OPEN LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR @officialABAT Your Excellency, I write with deep respect and concern for the security of our nation. Nigeria has immense promise, yet insecurity continues to undermine our progress and the peace of our communities. Our Armed Forces have shown courage and commitment, but modern threats have become too widespread and unpredictable for a single overstretched military structure to manage alone. This is why I humbly appeal for the creation of a Reserve Component for the Nigerian Armed Forces, similar to the United States National Guard. Such a system would strengthen internal security, improve response times, and support the military without the heavy financial burden of expanding full-time forces. A Nigerian Reserve or National Guard style system would provide several key benefits. First, it would allow trained Nigerians to serve part-time, giving the nation a large pool of manpower that can be mobilized in emergencies. Second, reservists would be based in their home states and familiar with local terrain, culture, and security challenges, enabling faster and more intelligent responses to crises such as banditry, kidnapping, communal conflicts, and oil theft. Third, the existence of a reserve structure would ease the pressure on active-duty soldiers, many of whom are deployed simultaneously across multiple regions and missions. A reserve force would also support disaster response, including floods, fires, building collapses, and environmental emergencies, ensuring that every state has trained personnel ready to act. Beyond security, it would provide employment opportunities, skills training, discipline, and leadership development for thousands of Nigerian youths, reducing vulnerability to crime and radicalization. A practical structure for Nigeria could include state-based battalions, federal activation authority for national emergencies, integration of veterans as trainers, and specialized units for cyber defense, engineering, medical support, and logistics. This framework is affordable, realistic, and consistent with global best practices. Your Excellency, Nigeria’s current wave of insecurity requires adaptive solutions. A Reserve Component would allow every state to contribute actively to security while strengthening national unity and resilience. This reform aligns with your Renewed Hope agenda and would stand as a legacy of visionary leadership. I respectfully urge the establishment of a Presidential Committee to design the reserve system, the drafting of a National Guard Bill, and pilot programs in regions most affected by insecurity. This initiative is not just military reform. It is a nation-building opportunity, one that can help secure the lives, hopes, and future of millions of Nigerians.
