I still don't think my childhood was bad enough to cause DID. But every time I tell my therapist a story about it, she just looks at me and says "I am so sorry you had to experience that" or "you shouldn't have had to go through that." Like, what?

Lately there’s been a lot of misinformation going around that “plurality” is just a word for DID/OSDD. It’s not! Plurality is not a medical term. It was invented by and for the plural community. It is not and never was exclusive to those with DID or OSDD. 🧵

I’m really tired of the narrative where patients who are “violent” are viewed as aggressive monsters while doctors are upheld as passive bystanders and innocent victims of violence— when for SO many of us, the medical providers ARE the perpetrators of violence.

The first time I was assaulted, I was a 3rd year medical student, and a psych patient handcuffed to a gurney rail in the ER fought so hard, the entire metal rail (still cuffed to his arm) separated from the bed. The 6ft piece of heavy steel would’ve gone flying into my skull had my former-linebacker attending not thrown me back, where I safely hit the wall instead, and he and two officers and two burly nurses wrestled the patient back down. I never felt unsafe in medicine, even after that, because it wasn’t a targeted assault — I was just there as a victim of his pathology, which he couldn’t control either. But times have changed. People are angrier, in healthcare and in the world. Compounded with the pressure cooker of the circumstances that land people in the ER, we exist in an explosive and violent world every day. Healthcare has more non-fatal workplace violence than any other profession…and we’re supposed to be the field of healing… 🤨

I think my neighbour's dog is a spy bc I'm ill & conspiracy theorists think Jewish ppl are an alien race holding a dictatorship over "normal ppl" bc they're racist.

Here’s to the people who's trauma did not give them thick skin. The ones who became more sensitive & insecure, who cry more easily, who get overwhelmed at small things. I’m so tired of the narrative that trauma makes you tough and untouchable. We’re survivors, not superheroes

I can’t believe I used to tell myself as a young teen “stop pretending you’re plural” bc we had fictives and other “cringy” system experiences and didn’t want to mock real systems 💀. Clearly it did not work lol and I’m glad I got out of that internalized ableist mindset.
