Peter Moore: skyrocketing console prices threaten the future of dedicated hardware “I think that’s probably what the hardware manufacturers are noodling right now is, the cost of making this stuff is now getting ridiculous. We can’t compete. We can’t even get supply for what we need because the chip manufacturers are fueling artificial intelligence demand. And they’re looking at [consumers] and probably say, 'We can’t make enough profit on you.'” “Every generation, the last two or three generations, we’ve all said, ‘Is this the last console generation? Do we need a dedicated piece of hardware between us, the television and our controller?’ And the answer so far has always been, yes, we do. But I’ve always said since I got in the industry in my Sega days, eventually you’ll just have a chip in the TV that will allow you to Netflix-style look at all the games that are available right now and how many people are playing and you’ll jump in. And do you need something between that experience on your screen and your controller? The lag and latency will be close to zero. And so off you go.” “I think this is a real test for the validity of a video game console. Either technology will solve the problem or the gamer will solve the problem by saying, ‘I can’t afford 800 bucks for a console. I will play on my PC. Maybe figure out ways of streaming the game to my 4K TV. If I don’t like to use a keyboard and a mouse, then I can get a controller that will work and off I go.’ And the PC becomes your console. I think that is the challenge. Gamers will always find ways to play games.” via: Kotaku kotaku.com/games-industry…

Xbox says it will help players recover hacked accounts “as quickly as possible” after a streamer nearly lost thousands of euros worth of digital games and years of personal data. The case involved streamer Joshua Khane, whose Microsoft account was compromised.m, His story went viral, and Xbox later restored access to his account. Following the backlash, Xbox Support posted a public message saying anyone dealing with the same account recovery issue can contact them directly. “If you’re also dealing with this account recovery issue, our DMs are open… we’ll help as quickly as possible.”

Former Valve writer Chet Faliszek says there’s no conspiracy behind PlayStation’s move away from physical games. In his view, the industry is simply following what most players have already chosen: buying games digitally. Faliszek argued that consumers ultimately decide how companies operate. “You, the consumer, have made your choice, and the choice is for digital.” He also pointed out that while many people online are upset about Sony ending physical, sales data has shown for years that digital purchases have massively overtaken physical copies. Todd Howard has revealed that he’s been a “professional lurker” on Reddit for years, regularly reading fan discussions even if he rarely posts. According to the Bethesda boss, community feedback has a bigger impact than many players might think. “You should know that we are always listening – so keep telling us how we can become better. You’d be surprised at how many great ideas I get from Reddit. So give your favorite an upvote and we’ll implement it. Maybe.”

Valve says it has no plans to make Steam Machine exclusive games because it believes its biggest advantage is the entire PC game library. Valve engineers Yazan Aldehayyat and Pierre-Loup Griffais told PC Gamer the company has no interest in the traditional console strategy of locking games to one platform. “We’re interested in having the whole PC catalog as our ‘launch exclusive,’” Valve also wants SteamOS to stay open so other companies can build devices for it rather than limiting it to Valve hardware.

Valve has replaced a customer’s stolen Steam Machine after the device disappeared just hours after it was delivered. The customer said the package was left outside their home while they were at work, and by the time they got back, it was gone. They contacted Steam Support, and Valve agreed to send them a replacement instead of leaving him without the console.

Jensen Huang’s signature black leather jacket just sold for $960,000 at a charity auction. It was expected to sell for $40,000–$60,000, but after 65 bids from 45 people, the final price was 16 times higher. The jacket was verified as the one Huang wore at Foxconn Tech Day in Taipei in October 2023, and his signature was authenticated too. For comparison, $960,000 is enough to buy around 240 RTX 5090s at today’s prices, or about 480 at NVIDIA’s original launch price. The money from the auction will go to the Edge Institute, a nonprofit that supports people working in technology, science, and culture. videocardz.com/newz/jensen-hu…

@HitmanGFX44 @Grummz sadly it will never go down because studios rather maximize revenue instead of being truthfully honest, and one of the main reasons games are expensive is because of physical game profits, which are lower because you have to count paying the console manufacturer and the store

A new report claims PlayStation could be using social media bots to defend its decision to stop making physical game discs. According to Moore’s Law Is Dead, AI was used to analyze accounts posting in support of PlayStation’s digital-only future. The report says many of those accounts looked suspicious, with recent creation dates, AI-generated profile pictures, and very similar posting patterns.

Sony’s decision to stop making physical PlayStation game discs is still causing major backlash and is now overshadowing one of its biggest games. The new Marvel’s Wolverine trailer is being obliterated in the comments. It now has more than 10,000 comments on YouTube, with many fans ignoring the trailer and using it to protest Sony’s move away from physical games. Some top comments say: “We want physical games.” “You know who isn’t the hero? The kller of physical.” Ironically, Marvel’s Wolverine will still launch with a physical PS5 edition.

We’ve literally had people tell us to CANCEL our digital release and do physical only. IDK if people realise that we are just 2 people and this is our first game. We’d LOVE to do physical & we support physical ownership but our game kinda has to do well digitally first 🤷

An indie developer was disappointed to find their PS5 game's trailer flooded with anti-Sony comments over its decision to stop making discs. Teeto's trailer is one of many on the PlayStation YouTube channel getting downvotes and angry comments. vgc.news/news/indie-dev…
