@Spongistatin It is perfectly ok if it does not make sense to you at all. That's why we are all different and unique in our own ways. Also, the post says that I'll be starting med school in the fall. If you must know, I'm simply waiting on scholarship packages before committing to any school

@boyann2002 Yes, but why not accepting your fate that you did not make it into medical school and do the best with it? I mean not everybody who likes basketball can become a professional basketball player for realities of life, bad luck etc.

10 years ago, I came to the US with a dream of becoming a physician. After a BS double majoring in Chemistry and Physics with a minor in Mathematics (AAMU-2017), a PhD in Organic Chemistry (Emory-2022), the dream is still well alive and the journey has been completely necessary.

@Spongistatin Totally understandable. Fortunately I've been lucky/blessed to not have incurred any student debt up to this point. I greatly appreciate your comments as they're logical and insightful

@boyann2002 At one point there is a need, in particular in the US to build up capital for retirement instead of paying down, student debt. Compounding needs time after all. Earlier earned money is exponentially worth more than later earned money Idealism for itself does not pay unfortunately

@Spongistatin You're absolutely correct, it doesn't make sense economically or time wise but in my humble opinion it's about finding ways to do something you care about while attempting to make a positive impact in the lives of others that really matters. Please see my other comment below

@boyann2002 Does that economically make sense ? You get quite old that way. In the US you likely have to pay back tuition costs and medical school is quite expensive too. The return on investment gets much lower and you miss the opportunity to get real job experience.

@VS_PhD I absolutely love both science (Chemistry) and Medicine, and would have pursued an MD/PhD in these areas if the opportunity presented itself earlier. Thanks for that question, I certainly encounter it during my med school interviews.

Yesterday was a big day as I successfully defended my PhD work on Asymmetric dirhodium Carbene C-H Functionalization as a Complementary Tool to Synthetic Disconnection Strategies. All thanks to my mentors, friends and family for being by my side all the way to this point.
