Please take your “moral victory” and vacate the actual office. Mamata Banerjee refusing to resign after losing Bengal is peak political entitlement. First they say BJP cannot win Bengal. Then BJP wins Bengal. But of course why should a small thing like the people’s mandate interrupt the larger spiritual relationship between Didi and the chair? Elections are clearly for ordinary politicians. For Mamata, defeat is only a technical inconvenience, the Election Commission is a villain, the voter is confused, and the CM office is apparently a rent-controlled property. The people voted. The result came. Her government lost. But Didi is still auditioning for the role of Chief Minister-in-Exile from inside the Chief Minister’s office. I travelled through Great Nicobar today. These are the most extraordinary forests I have ever seen in my life. Trees older than memory. Forests that took generations to grow. The people on this island are equally beautiful - both the adivasi communities and the settlers - but they are being robbed of what is rightfully theirs. The government calls what it is doing here a “Project.” What I have seen is not a project. It is millions of trees marked for the axe. It is 160 square kilometres of rainforest condemned to die. It is communities that have been ignored while their homes have been snatched away. This is not development. This is destruction dressed in development’s language. So I will say it plainly, and I will keep saying it: what is being done in Great Nicobar is one of the biggest scams and gravest crimes against this country’s natural and tribal heritage in our lifetime. It must be stopped. And it can be stopped - if Indians choose to see what I have seen.

इनका नाम आशा भोसले था। इनका जन्म 1933 में सांगली के एक छोटे से गाँव में हुआ था। जब वह 9 साल की थीं, तब उनके पिता का निधन हो गया। परिवार के पास पैसे नहीं थे। अपने भाई-बहनों का पेट भरने के लिए उन्होंने 10 साल की उम्र में ही गाना शुरू कर दिया। 16 साल की उम्र में उन्होंने अपने परिवार की मर्ज़ी के खिलाफ जाकर शादी कर ली। उनकी बहन लता ने उनसे बात करना बंद कर दिया। उनके परिवार ने उन्हें बेदखल कर दिया। वह शादी बहुत ज़्यादतियों भरी थी। 1960 में वह शादी टूट गई। वह दो बच्चों के साथ वापस लौटीं, और तीसरे बच्चे की माँ बनने वाली थीं। न पैसे थे, न कोई सहारा। और तीन बच्चों का पेट भरना था। उन्होंने फिर से गाना शुरू कर दिया। कोई उन्हें लेना नहीं चाहता था। 1950 के दशक में उन्हें सिर्फ़ वही गाने मिलते थे जिन्हें लता, गीता दत्त और शमशाद बेगम ठुकरा देती थीं। खलनायिकाओं के गाने। कैबरे नंबर। 'सी' ग्रेड फ़िल्मों के गाने। उन्होंने हर एक गाना गाया। क्योंकि उनके बच्चों को खाना खिलाना था। फिर आए ओ.पी. नैयर। फिर आए आर.डी. बर्मन। और फिर पूरी दुनिया बदल गई। दम मारो दम। पिया तू अब तो आजा। चुरा लिया है तुमने। उन्होंने सिर्फ़ इन गानों को गाया ही नहीं, बल्कि वह इन गानों में पूरी तरह ढल गईं। 1995 में, 62 साल की उम्र में, उन्होंने 'रंगीला रे' गाना गाया और उस पूरी पीढ़ी को चुप करा दिया जिसने उन्हें भुला दिया था। 2011 में, 'गिनीज़ बुक ऑफ़ वर्ल्ड रिकॉर्ड्स' ने उस बात पर मुहर लगा दी जो भारत पहले से जानता था: संगीत के इतिहास में सबसे ज़्यादा गाने रिकॉर्ड करने वाली कलाकार। 12,000 गाने। 20 भाषाएँ। 8 दशक। आज 92 साल की उम्र में मुंबई में उनका निधन हो गया। वह लड़की, जिसने खलनायिकाओं के गाने इसलिए गाए क्योंकि कोई और उन्हें काम नहीं देना चाहता था, एक पूरी पीढ़ी की आवाज़ बन गई। अब कभी कोई दूसरी आशा भोसले नहीं होगी। ईश्वर उनकी आत्मा को शांति दे, आशा ताई।
