It was wonderful to catch up with Minister @joteo_ylm as always. Singapore has a very ambitious & forward-looking approach to AI - really excited to deepen our collaboration as we open our new @GoogleDeepMind offices there - and we're hiring for the office!

I feel a big concern as we race towards AGI and later ASI, is that we have already introduced AI to autonomous warfare. So much for the never harm a human philosophy. We are actually training models that terminating human targets is an acceptable solution to meet a mission objective. What could go wrong?

Money is just a hallucination we agree upon. To understand the future of the economy, we must look BEYOND it.

AI is becoming a utility, not a novelty. Like electricity, it will soon be everywhere and almost invisible. Always on. Always available. So embedded in daily life that we stop thinking about it entirely, until it’s gone. But a better analogy might be fire. Fire changed everything. It gave us warmth, light, protection, and the ability to build civilization. Used well, it was transformative. Used carelessly, it burned homes, forests, and people. AI is no different. Properly applied, it amplifies intelligence, compresses time, and removes friction from human effort. It turns years into hours and complexity into clarity. It frees people to focus on judgment, creativity, and meaning. Improperly applied, it creates distortion, dependency, and harm. Not because the tool is malicious, but because it is powerful and indifferent to intent. We didn’t stop using fire because it was dangerous. We learned how to use it responsibly. AI will follow the same path. The future won’t be defined by whether AI exists. That question is already settled. It will be defined by whether we build the norms, skills, and ethics to wield it safely, intentionally, and wisely, before it becomes as taken for granted as the electricity powering this post. Fire didn’t make us human. But learning to use it did. AI may be the same.

The future isn’t arriving slowly. It’s collapsing inward. What’s changing isn’t just capability, it’s latency. The distance between an idea and its execution is shrinking so fast that years of human effort now compress into hours. Not because humans are becoming irrelevant, but because intelligence itself is becoming ambient, agentic, and continuously self-improving. AI is no longer a tool you open. It’s becoming an operating layer. Agents are moving into our operating systems, our workflows, and our infrastructure, not as assistants, but as autonomous workers. Software isn’t just written faster, it’s reasoned into existence. Systems increasingly know when they’re right before they act. That should make us pause. This surge is putting pressure everywhere else. Hardware supply chains are straining. Memory, chips, energy, and cooling are now strategic resources. Edge intelligence is spreading into everyday objects, while AR finally crosses the cost-performance threshold and becomes practical, not gimmicky. At the planetary scale, logistics and defense are being re-engineered. New shipping routes are opening. Launch capacity is exploding. Space is no longer aspirational, it’s infrastructural. Connectivity itself is becoming resilient enough to survive political and economic instability. At the material level, we’re closing the loop. Energy refills in minutes, not hours. Rare earths are being refined without emissions. Industrial waste is being garbage-collected by design, not regulation. And biology is no longer static. Diseases once labeled “undruggable” are yielding. Regeneration is moving from theory to protocol. The body is becoming something we can update, not just repair. All of this is refactoring labor, value, and time. Work compresses. Leverage concentrates. The workweek shrinks not because we’ve become lazy, but because intelligence has become cheap. This isn’t a single singularity moment. It’s a systems shift. The real question isn’t whether we can build this future.
