This has a clinical name. Revenge bedtime procrastination. And the ADHD version runs on a completely different mechanism than the neurotypical one.
A neurotypical person stays up late because they want more leisure time. The ADHD brain stays up because it spent every drop of dopamine it had on executive function during the day. Sitting in meetings, managing transitions, filtering impulses, remembering the thing you were supposed to remember. That burns through dopamine the way sprinting burns through glycogen. By 10pm the tank is empty.
But here's where it gets counterintuitive. The exhaustion is physical. The dopamine deficit is neurological. Those are two separate systems. Your muscles want sleep. Your prefrontal cortex is starving for the stimulation it was denied all day because it spent 14 hours on task-switching and impulse control instead of anything that actually felt rewarding.
The phone at midnight is the brain trying to collect what it's owed. Low-effort, high-stimulation content. Scrolling, short videos, rabbit holes. The exact profile of activity that delivers dopamine without requiring the executive function you already depleted.
The sleep researchers call this a "self-regulation failure." It's closer to a debt collection. You borrowed against your own reward system to function all day. The bill comes due at midnight. And the brain will not let you sleep until it gets paid.

Stepping directly onto the set of HBO's The Gilded Age in Manhattan today, and the production scale is absolutely mind-blowing. To completely transform modern New York City back to the 1880s, the crew laid down massive textured carpets over the asphalt to perfectly mimic historic stone streets. There are over 350 background actors fully dressed in period-accurate costumes, alongside dozens of real horse-drawn carriages filling the block. It is incredible to see how much physical craftsmanship goes into creating just a few moments of television magic.

Probably one of my favorite Euphoria scenes because it’s actually a very common real-life situation. Jules was excited to finally meet the guy she had been texting, but the meetup was in a sketchy location late at night and Rue naturally reacted by saying that maybe it wasn’t the safest idea and suggested meeting in a more public place instead.
But classic Jules immediately became defensive because in her mind she was sharing something exciting and wanted emotional support, not caution or criticism. So when Rue pushed back and focused on the danger instead of excitement, Jules interpreted it as negative energy rather than concern.
That’s why I find the scene so interesting because it perfectly shows how people have completely different ideas of what support looks like. Some people, like Jules, just want excitement and emotional validation when they share things, while others, like Rue, instinctively respond with advice and concern. A lot of miscommunication in relationships honestly comes from that exact difference.
