🚨 Gojjam Update 🚨 Recent ENDF counter-insurgency operations have significantly degraded the combat effectiveness of ethno-extremist militant elements operating in the Gojjam area. The militants operational capability has been substantially weakened, leaving them increasingly unable to defend against or effectively resist ENDF operations, including within their traditional strongholds and established sanctuary areas.

🚨Opinion 🚨 The TPLF’s assessment prior to launching its attack on the ENDF Northern Command in 2020 proved to be a grave strategic miscalculation, one that ultimately contributed to devastating human and material losses . Judging by the rhetoric of some of its senior officials in recent months, the organization appears to be repeating the same flawed assumptions that preceded the 2020 conflict. The TPLF has long been one of the most Machiavellian political actors in Ethiopia’s modern history, demonstrating a willingness to align with virtually any external actor including those widely regarded as hostile to Ethiopia’s national interests if doing so advances the objectives of its leadership. If these recent TPLF officials statements reflect the organization’s current strategic thinking, they suggest that it has yet to fully internalize the lessons of the last conflict. They must understand that the political and security landscape in Ethiopia has fundamentally changed. The era in which armed insurgency could realistically be used to overthrow the federal government has came to an end. Any political actor seeking lasting influence must recognize that sustainable change can only be achieved through political engagement rather than military confrontation.

Opinion The TPLF appears to be engaged in an extensive war propaganda campaign that, by some assessments, exceeds the scale of its pre-2020 messaging. If this trend continues, it risks heightening tensions and increasing the likelihood of renewed conflict. All stakeholders and regional organizations should closely monitor these developments, exert diplomatic pressure on the TPLF to uphold its commitments under the Pretoria Agreement, and encourage TPLF to refrain from actions that could drag the country into another war. It is also worth noting that TPLF officials have, on several occasions, publicly stated that they do not consider themselves bound by the Pretoria Agreement.
