Breakthrough T1D

For millions of Americans, access to affordable insulin is literally a matter of life and death. No one should be forced to ration lifesaving medication just to make ends meet. Today, I joined a bipartisan group of colleagues to introduce the INSULIN Act, which would cap the cost of insulin at $35 per month for those with commercial or employer-sponsored insurance and create a pilot program to provide insulin to uninsured patients at the same cost.

In the greatest country on Earth, those with Type 1 diabetes shouldn’t have to go bankrupt to afford the insulin medication they need. Today, I introduced bipartisan legislation to change that.

We applaud U.S. Senators @SenatorShaheen, @SenatorCollins, @SenatorWarnock, and John Kennedy for introducing the bipartisan INSULIN Act of 2026. One of our foundational beliefs is that everyone should have access to the insulin they need to survive. Our community has been raising their voices on this issue for years, engaging with Congress, employers, health insurance companies, and drug manufacturers. The INSULIN Act builds upon recent progress by capping out-of-pocket costs, eliminating utilization management barriers, increasing transparency in the insulin market, and promoting generic and biosimilar competition. It also strengthens support for uninsured individuals through state pilot programs and a national insulin resource center. Connor was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) when he was 10 years old. For years, he regularly experienced episodes of severe hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, making his T1D extremely difficult to manage. Connor is a participant in Dr. Piotr Witkowski’s University of Chicago clinical trial of Eledon’s tegoprubart, an immunotherapy that is safer and with milder side effects than standard immunosuppressants. Passionate advocates from across the country have joined us in Washington, D.C., for Breakthrough T1D on the Hill (formerly Government Day) for four days of community building, briefings, volunteer recognition, and representing the type 1 diabetes (T1D) community on Capitol Hill. CEO Aaron Kowalski shared our State of the Foundation update, and we presented the Breakthrough T1D Mary Tyler Moore Award to Princess Padmaja Kumari Parmar of Udaipur, India, with Mary’s husband, Dr. S. Robert Levine honoring Mary’s legacy. It was a powerful evening! Princess Padmaja’s remarks inspired the room. Diagnosed at the age of 5, Princess Padmaja is turning her platform into action - raising awareness, challenging stigma, and advocating for people with T1D worldwide. Now, our advocates are taking their lived experiences to Capitol Hill, meeting with Members of Congress and calling for sustained Federal research funding, including the Special Diabetes Program that helps power T1D breakthroughs. Funding for cures is on the line. The Special Diabetes Program (SDP), a cornerstone of type 1 diabetes research, expires on January 30. Since 1997, it has powered breakthroughs from automated insulin delivery to the first therapy shown to delay T1D and the science now bringing cell therapies closer to reality, while also generating more than $50 billion in federal health care savings. 📣 Tell your Members of Congress to support a bipartisan, multi-year renewal of the SDP so this life-changing progress can continue for people with T1D.
