Why is no one talking about this golden Monster of Lando’s?!

This situation at McLaren is brewing. And I mentioned to you a long while back - I doubt both drivers remain in the team after a real, intense title fight - the loser is going to move on after assessing the field in 2026.
This is just my hunch.
What’s fascinating is the dynamic at play here. The reality is that, given their experience levels, Lando should’ve never been challenged by Oscar. It seems clear that Oscar was brought in to be a promising second driver to collect points in a way that Ricciardo was not. And that’s how it was looking. Oscar shocked some people, McLaren included.
Oscar starts out on a tear, with Lando struggling for consistency. This presents some significant challenges for the team. Lando is the long term project, the financially and promotionally backed guy. He’s stuck it out at the team waiting for a competitive car, with this mutual understanding that he is the main guy. And then it appears Oscar is going to be the one to take better advantage of the machinery that is incapable of losing a WDC or WCC this year, no matter how inconsistent they perform.
What I find fascinating is how the team responded to this unexpected circumstance. We all knew no intervention or development in the car was needed for them to convincingly win the WCC. That was all but a guarantee very early on. And they aimed to abandon the 2025 car as early as possible.
But in a year where development budgets and engineering time are at an extreme premium, McLaren chose to launch down a path of modifying the front suspension in a way that was custom tailored to Lando. Not a generic design, as was the initial car, to fit both drivers… but development resources spent solely to alter the front suspension characteristics to suit Lando’s personal feedback.
Obviously, this was not a possibility for both drivers to receive this level of individualized development. So it does communicate a bit in this regard.
Progress forward, and it seems that whatever anti-dive changes and feel changes occurred at the front of the car, specifically aimed at Lando, have also led to a setup window that allows a bit more platform control and stability.
So Oscar is left with a tough choice - keep running what they had which feels closer to his preferences, while the car continues to shift away somewhat, or adopt Lando’s custom-made front suspension that Oscar doesn’t prefer and try to adapt his driving to fit a development specifically made for his teammate.
I think we’re seeing a bit of the inevitable pathway that this confidence and fit shift has caused, playing out right before our eyes. It’s arguably one of the most critical parts of the behavior of these cars.
Part of me gets this from McLaren. If somebody has committed long term like Lando, there’s nothing wrong with giving him reciprocated support, maybe even more than his teammate. But the repeated message from McLaren has been “we favor nobody, it’s 2 number 1 drivers.”
I just can’t look through the evidence of the season’s updates, notwithstanding some of the team radio calls, and conclude that they’re on totally equal footing within the team. 1 driver got a fully customized front suspension via a preciously costly midseason development … and the other did not and cannot be given the same due to time and budgets.
At the end of the day, I think the points situation and the car comfort means Lando has this championship wrapped up. And it would appear that, while they were happy with anyone being McLaren WDC, in their ideal scenario this was the desired result for McLaren, regardless of the rhetoric.
That’s why I think this situation gets more volatile and spicy over the next 12 months. Because once Lando is the one that has the inevitable McLaren WDC trophy that was a foregone conclusion for one of them this year… Piastri’s ability to have any development influence is gone for good.
That’s why I don’t think he stays, and that’s why this situation is one to keep an eye on.
