@nnzp1730 @Empty_America Turkeys got enough meat for 2 meals for a big family, rabbits and quail are less than one meal per big family.

If you really wanted to feed yourself from the land I would select somewhere in the East with immediate access to public forest land and very liberal limits on deer. Parts of NJ or CT would work oddly well, and you can get seafood if near the coast.

Alaska since European contact has never been about “living off the land” bc it’s simply impossible in most of the state without imported food The Alaska territory was always about resource extraction like gold and fur

@nnzp1730 @Empty_America We get a lot of fish from my father in law who is a charter captain, but I am not sure I could stomach fish every day. Venison is good, but tags limit out and a family of 6 would plow through a couple of deer rather rapidly.

@Empty_America haha, would be a nightmare to park though, luxurious if you don't have such concerns.

The typical choice today is a heavy duty pick up and a gooseneck instead of something like an F750, oddly that combo can do the same weight. But the 750 is cheaper and gets the same milage under load, might be fun. I have the CDL already.

I'm seriously considering a used F750 crew cab flatbed for my next "pickup."

@Empty_America Some of the people had boats, but not all of them. River fishing is incredibly productive during the runs.

@brenthalonen2 Coastal versus interior is a big difference. Although those people often have quite the investement in boats and motors, etc.

@Empty_America Problem is that it can only be the US. The EU can open its borders all they like but they are still conservative. Hard to imagine China doing this and they are already getting old. Russia? Africa? Brazil? Argentina? India? Red White and Blue.

It of course follows that some places could also be "closed." Perhaps Denmark and so forth. It would seem that both NYC/Dallas and Denmark have roles to play in life.

I'm sure this will trigger many, but doesn't it seem as if there should be at least one place that is uniquely "open" as a land of opportunity? Also seems like this particular place will naturally tend to become the "capitol" of the world. The NYC effect, etc.
Hugh@HMBrough_

The whole point of being in America is that we don’t do the blood and soil sh*t. There are a ton of Old World countries you have to do that sh*t in. Why can’t we just have one place to be a land of opportunity?

@shagbark_hick In my area, absolutely not like that. 20 years ago when I moved here my friends in the trades would get laid off in the winter, now everyone has work year round.

A possible Canary in the coalmine: Here in rural Upstate New York, it is not true that "nearly everyone who wants a job has one" anymore. We had a few years in recent days during which everyone was hiring, nobody could find decent workers, etc, but that season appears to have ended. My cousin, for example, has 12 years of construction experience, 3 years in the Mason's Union, 5 years as a Railroad Maintenance of Way Foreman in a supervisory role, every OSHA cert under the sun, is a carpentry instructor and has a 6-month union-approved certificate from a major Masonry training center. His references are immaculate, he's a strong interviewer, and he is a HARD worker. He has applied to over 125 jobs in the last six months, and he has received 4 call-backs. Two were to inform him that he hadn't been hired, two resulted in interviews. Of those, one resulted in a job offer at half his current salary with zero health or retirement benefits, the other yielded nothing -- no callback. 3 years ago or so, he was getting called by everyone in the industry. People were begging him to come work, but he was happy where he was. Now? Those companies have either scaled back their labor needs, left the state, or gone under. Judging by this, the mainstream economic indicators that say "the economy is great" don't seem to be showing the reality on the ground. My cousin's experience is not singular, either; he says the rest of his buddies in the various industries he's worked in are seeing the same problem.

@yacineMTB also anything in controls has a super long testing time, so endurance to put up more cycles of testing is very real. I've done automatic dip line controls (think crane plus a bunch of tanks of various chemicals) and the amount of time to test is insane.

@Empty_America I think low level white collar work resembles homework, but high level white collar work involves a ton of persuasion, critical thinking, and teamwork.

@Empty_America The first professional job I ever interviewed for a lady from upper management came in and talked to us (group of people that got brought on site). She said if they only hired on resume they would hire all women. They avoided this because men performed better as they aged.

I hated elementary school, but I recently had the chance to observe it, and it's nothing but a direct preparation for the office, which is the life most avidly aspire to. There are assignments, you need to look busy, they make power-point type stuff, there are rules and "HR."
roger lamarre (Ray)@roger_lama79345

For the past 10 years I observed women gradually replace the old men in the white collar environment. They seem completely in their element. Thriving. Doing a good job. Why fight this? Here is an infinity-homework lifestyle and women are volunteering to do it, and you seethe?

@lymanstoneky I actually think paternal leave policies are --bad-- for fertility in many cases. Creates social pressure to be done having kids. I've heard my friends that have long paternity breaks get "once in a lifetime" or similar comments. If you have 10 children you hear about it!

@wil_da_beast630 but societally the man is expected to be able to financially support the family. The way the economy's going that's just not feasible for most young people.

@GRONreturns @Empty_America Why bother have your bikes have bikes, they show up every year for nearly nothing. Sources indicate that it takes 1.5-2 acres of managed hay to support an adult horse. Hardly too cheap to count.

There is a lot of farmland in this country that readily pays for a late 19th century standard of living, but simply cannot fund a normal 21st century lifestyle with all the industrial comforts. Thus the Amish "emerged" to colonize this niche.
Eric Richards@EricRichards22

The Sandy River valley is awash in amish. Five horse buggies on Rt 2 this morning Makes sense, I guess; it's decent farmland but nobody could grow anything that would actually pay for itself and comply with laws

@GRONreturns @Empty_America Hay and fodder for the winter ain’t free. Grazing land ain’t free. You can get literally free bikes that can be stored in a small corner of a garage year round and can be ready to be ridden in a few minutes.
