@gibquig @br4lm @BillShaikin (A) fans WILL show up in OC, and did right up until pandemic. (B) However, stadium is obv. old & needs replacing (in OC if not elsewhere). (C) Pandemic=brutal and (D) oh, yeah, they're perpetually bad. Longest MLB postseason drought (11 yrs). ... Being in OC is NOT the problem.

@theAdamGreen Agree 100%. His personality has been pretty spot on for Tucson. And to your point in your 2nd sentence, my comment less about UA as an institution & more about him. You're right though -- whether there's something there, there, we may soon find out.

@brettfera Only Tommy knows if he's happy but I was telling a friend he just doesn't strike me as a good fit, at least personality wise, for a job like UNC. Unless there are issues with the administration or other things that we don't know about, hard to see him leaving Tucson.

My most luke-warm take of the week: Tommy Lloyd is not a good fit for UNC (or Kansas, or Kentucky), and that's legitimately, no hyperbole, the BEST complement I could give him. He's a different cat (no pun intended) and that's why him being in Tucson just works.

@gibquig @br4lm @BillShaikin Roughly 1/2 MLB teams have a World Series win this century. Angles are one of those. Also, they’re 13th (consistently actually) in attendance in MLB for years on end. For a team that hasn’t been above .500 in 10 years, that’s NOT a problem. Location isn’t the issue AT ALL.

@br4lm @BillShaikin Well Orange County hasn't really worked out for success. Inglewood would be middle ground for LA and OC. They need to get into some of that LA money. They should be top 5 in revenue, not sitting out of the top 10.

For coaches in their 40s and 50s, jobs like North Carolina and Kansas may never be open again. We could have a situation soon where they’re open at the same time. Point being, it’s dangerous to assume what someone will or won’t do when they have a once-in-a-career opportunity.

@Akbar_Shabazz Seriously. Absolute heater right now. It’s not just winning. He’s a couple of final jeopardy misses of like… MULTIPLE $60K rounds so far. 🤯

@brettfera For me, I wouldn’t necessarily blame Tommy Lloyd if the team loses this weekend. It’s easy to scapegoat the coach. I think it’s fair be disappointed in the outcome but still recognize that the program is in an excellent spot

I make people mad (for whatever reason) every time I say this, but a team that makes the sweet 16 finishes no worse than tied for 9th in the nation that year. Yes, more is the goal, but I hope Arizona fans truly realize how good they have it under Lloyd.

@wctdmf i hear you, but that's a contradiction ... "more than anyone could've asked of him in his first 5 seasons" & "tied for 9th is a bit underwhelming" are incongruent. That's my point. Folks generally satisfied, I just hope everyone takes a breath if things go south Thurs or Sat.

@brettfera We love Tommy Lloyd. He’s done more than anyone could’ve asked of him in his first 5 seasons in Tucson. But we haven’t won since ‘97 and this is one of the best Arizona teams ever and one of the best regular season teams all year so finishing tied for 9th is a bit underwhelming

@JordanAckerMI @DanWolken Sure, but women’s basketball does this with a MUCH larger bracket though. Once it hits “sweet 16” level (same as men’s hockey here), it’s same as this — they move to regional sites.

@DanWolken There's ways to do this if you want a "neutral" experience, but again...they handle it just fine for Women's basketball (oh, and it's great.) The reward for being a #1 seed should be home games.

@PironPikePuke yeah, but the day-to-day tug of war is real. If Arizona loses this week, people will start to wonder. They shouldn't, but they will.

@jameskelley520 lol I thought that’s what it meant but also wasn’t sure if it meant as a ONE sees… have won in round of 32 ten straight times. Either way, it’s a “third Tuesday in October when the sun rises before 629 am” kind of stat IMO. Random and odd. 😊

@brettfera When they lost recently it was Sweet 16 or first round, not second

What gives me so much joy is knowing the people involved in Pima women’s basketball winning a national championship. Head coach Todd Holthaus has won over 400 games at Pima and has built a consistent winner, which is tough to do at a JuCo nowadays. A year after going through a health scare, to see him lead Pima to a title is a feel-good story. Then his right-hand man Jim Rosborough, after being on the sidelines with Lute Olson and Holthaus for over four decades, is in his last season as a full-time coach. There’s multiple layers to why Pima winning a natty is awesome. One of my favorite sports moments of the year.
