@spacetigre One of my favorite IG pages ever was supremecopies, which showed the inspiration of each supreme piece and it made me fall in love with the brand. It was so cool seeing how there was a story and careful curation process behind every design.

This is what I meant when talking about the context behind Supreme’s references and why usually it’s not just slapping graphics on cotton and charging $45. Supreme’s connection to music, specifically hiphop, connects it to these tapes which is why it works.

【Supreme豆知識】 シュプリームがあの日本企業のデザインをサンプリング？！オマージュから20年後に正式コラボを果たしたアーカイブアイテムとは 1994年にスタートしたシュプリーム。 その黎明期においては、さまざまなブランドやデザインを無許可でパクr…サンプリングしたアイテムをリリースしていたことで知られています。 今回ご紹介するシュプリームのオマージュアイテムの元ネタは1960年に設立された日本の消費者電子機器メーカー、マクセル(Maxell)。 電池からスタートしカセットテープなどを中心に成長を遂げた同社は、80年代に入ると米国にてリリースしたのちのポップカルチャーに影響を与えるある広告キャンペーンをきっかけに有名となります。 それがマクセルのオーディオカセットテープを宣伝するための広告キャンペーン、通称「Blown Away Guy」。 1980年にRolling Stone誌の2ページ広告として登場し、その後テレビCMにも展開されました。 ル・コルビュジエの椅子に座った男がJBL L100スピーカーから出る強力な音で髪やネクタイ、ランプシェード、グラスなどが吹き飛ばされている様子を描いたこの広告。 高音質のテープがもたらす「吹き飛ばされるような」体験を象徴し、ポップカルチャーのアイコンとなります。 そんなマクセルの広告にインスパイアされたのが2002年のシュプリームのMaxell Tee。 男のシルエットはそのままにズボンをサイドラインが入ったトラックパンツに、シューズをナイキのスウッシュが映えるエアフォース1に変更したストリートチックなサンプリングを果たしています。 そして時は流れて2023年。ストリーミング全盛時代において本家本元のマクセルのカセットテープとついに正式コラボ。 当時のコマーシャル画像もプリントに盛り込んだこの別注アイテム、発売時にその意味に気づいていた人はどれくらい居たのでしょうか…？ これまでのアーカイブのうち、発売中止になってしまったシュプリームのアイテムまとめはこちら💁 fashion-archive.com/supreme-cancel…
