Brian Burnsed (@brianburnsed) profiles golfer Sam Bennett, who became a star at the 2023 Masters while trying to overcome his father's death. The subsequent year proved not to have been as smooth as his made-for-TV Augusta narrative wanted. READ IT: si.com/golf/sam-benne…

@KVanValkenburg This was so damn engrossing and authentic. Something that will be worth revisiting five years from now, and 10, and on and on. Congrats and glad you were there to capture it.

A group of investors & ex-Disney executives have met with ADs at 30 power schools with a pitch: a $9 billion infusion as part of a 70-school football league. Looming over SEC & Big Ten meetings is "Project Rudy." "The claim is everybody will be saved." bit.ly/3TYO8QC

How he navigated that while fighting to make the pro ranks in one of the world’s most mentally grueling sports astounds me. For him, despite the success at Augusta, that climb is far from over and he yearns for that difficult past not to define his present and future.

So, I’m grateful that Sam Bennett and his family permitted me to tell their story and grateful that we were able to commiserate over our shared experiences and shared grief.

Sam Bennett is 30th in points going into this week's Korn Ferry Tour Championship. Earlier this year in SI, @brianburnsed profiled the 2023 Masters low amateur and shared his story of perseverance through grief. si.com/golf/sam-benne…

Hey, it's pretty cool to be included in the "notable" section of the Year's Best Sports Writing book series yet again. Congrats to all whose work was recognized and thanks to the editors who helped shape the piece (cc: @JasonSchwartz) si.com/college/2023/0…

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, there is the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital in Kinshasa and the Samuel Mutombo Institute of Science & Entrepreneurship school in Mbuji-Mayi. Built by Dikembe Mutombo✊🏽He didn’t just talk about it; he was about it

Gutted to hear that Dikembe Mutombo has died at 58 after battling brain cancer. I was fortunate to spend some time with him in 2022 to discuss his life's most important work: What a legacy he leaves behind, particularly in his native Congo. si.com/nba/2022/07/15…

Sums it up perfectly. Paying the loudest bloviators tens of millions while cutting ties with someone like @ZachLowe_NBA, who expertly meshes analytics with reporting and storytelling (very difficult!), is yet another example that, collectively, we’re careening toward the bottom.
DrewDinkmeyer@DrewDinkmeyer

The names ESPN have kept have often been the most provocative as opposed to the most studied. They're not unique in these choices. It's happening throughout our society and it's a long-term losing plan - for all of us. @ZachLowe_NBA 's work is exceptional - many will follow wherever it goes, but we're all worse off when big platforms pass on well researched/educated work for more visceral content. We should value work that makes us think and question and learn just as much as work that makes us feel and react.

"Time isn't in endless supply and I want to spend mine in ways that are more personally meaningful." A beautiful--and, these days, rare--sentiment, particularly coming from someone who had achieved so much.

"I think it's dangerous for filmmakers and distributors alike to say they have made an objective documentary when, in fact, that is not the case. For those kinds of films -- which are becoming well-produced celebrity commercials -- there needs to be truth in advertising." Yep.
