THREE DAYS, friends. Three days from sending humans beyond low Earth orbit for the first time in over 50 years. Today, NASA confirmed that Artemis II is set to launch on April 1 at 3:24 PM PDT. The rocket, spacecraft, and ground systems are all ready. Even the astronauts (Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen) are already prepping at Kennedy Space Center in quarantine. The trip is a 10-day free-return trajectory (which means the Moon's gravity swings the spacecraft around and sends it back to Earth without needing an engine burn, so it's a built-in safety net that gets you home “for free”) covering roughly 600,000 miles. It’ll break records and make history, taking the astronauts beyond the far side of the Moon and farther from Earth than any human has ever traveled. Koch will be the first woman, Glover the first Black astronaut, and Hansen the first Canadian to fly on a lunar mission. The risks are big. Once they leave Earth orbit, they're on their own, with stretches of communication blackout when they're behind the far side of the Moon, and no quick return if something goes wrong. Artemis II is truly the first step toward establishing a permanent presence on the Moon. Artemis II is to Artemis essentially what Apollo 8 was to Apollo: the critical test flight needed to prove we can take humans to the Moon and back safely before attempting a landing. Everything announced at Ignition last week, the Moon base, accelerated cadence, and path to Mars, depends on the success of this mission. None of it happens without proving SLS and Orion can carry a crew there and return them safely. Just three days left. A record-breaking mission of many firsts is happening.
