A legislative measure to reform the state’s juvenile justice court system died after the Senate voted to continue working on the bill, unaware that the House had adjourned for the day. Mississippi is mourning the loss of Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Jimerson who was killed in the line of duty last night. Deputy Jimerson was a hero who bravely sacrificed his life while protecting and serving others.  Our entire state is praying for Deputy Jimerson’s family, friends, and everyone at the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. We will never forget him.

I’m grateful for the Opioid Settlement Advisory Council’s work. Their hard work and recommendations are valuable, but stewarding these funds remains the legislature’s responsibility. I am committed to seeing these funds used to protect and serve opioid epidemic victims in MS.
