You can use SSH keys to encrypt messages and files using a tool called age. Very handy for securely sharing secrets with people whose SSH keys you already have. We sometimes use it to distribute credentials to managed customers: brightbox.com/blog/2024/09/1…

Even the containerd developers made that mistake previously, so we ended up needing to support clients that were more oauthy than the API actually allows for!

Implementing the Docker registry auth API was not at all fun. It's close enough to oauth that we thought integrating it with our own oauth API would be no trouble, but no: It's close to oauth but not quite, so easy to implement it incorrectly!
