[ENGLISH] 📢Privacy, personal-data protection, freedom of expression, non-discrimination by algorithms, and the right not to be subject to undue surveillance form the minimum baseline on which any digital sovereignty strategy must be built. Protecting these rights is not an obstacle to innovation; it is the condition for innovation to be democratic, legitimate, and socially useful. These are some of the conclusions reached in “A Progressive Vision for Democratic AI & Digital Sovereignty?”, a strategic discussion on artificial intelligence, digital sovereignty, and democracy, held in Toronto, Canada, on July 9. The speakers are progressive policymakers and thought leaders from across the Americas, like Avi Lewis, Leader of Canada’s NDP; Aisén Etcheverry, Former Chilean Minister of Innovation; Nancy Okail, President & CEO, Centre of International Policy USA; and Sigrid Segura, Frente Amplio Deputy from Costa Rica. 📅The input gathered during the seminar will serve as a valuable contribution to the 2026 Panamerican Congress, which will take place from August 21 to 23 in Montevideo, Uruguay, and will bring together more than 100 parliamentarians and experts from 15 countries across the continent. The next preparatory meeting will be held in Mexico City in August and will focus on multilateralism. Entre los ponentes figuraron responsables políticos progresistas y líderes de opinión de toda América, como Avi Lewis, líder del NDP de Canadá; Aisén Etcheverry, exministra de Ciencia de Chile; Nancy Okail, presidenta y directora ejecutiva del Center for International Policy (EEUU. ); y Sigrid Segura, diputada del Frente Amplio de Costa Rica. 📅Los aportes recopilados durante el seminario constituirán una valiosa contribución para el Congreso Panamericano de 2026, que se realizará entre el 21 y el 23 de agosto en Montevideo (Uruguay) y contará con la participación de más de 100 parlamentarios y expertos de 15 países de todo el continente. [ENGLISH] Today progressive parliamentarians and experts from Canada 🇨🇦, Chile 🇨🇱, the US 🇺🇸 and Costa Rica 🇨🇷 held a meeting in Toronto to build a shared agenda on democratic AI and digital sovereignty, ahead of the 2026 Panamerican Congress in Montevideo. The deployment of AI systems, especially in areas of high public impact such as education, health, public security, or justice, cannot be left to the black-box logic of major platforms. The state must demand explainability, public auditability, social oversight, and the capacity to intervene when these systems reproduce bias, deepen inequality, or compromise fundamental rights. This event in Toronto is the third preparatory gathering ahead of the Congress and is co-organized by the Broadbent Institute, Rumbo Colectivo, and the Panamerican Congress. The next annual Congress will take place in Montevideo, Uruguay, between 21 and 23 August 2026 and will bring together representatives from 15 countries in the Americas, under the leadership of President Yamandú Orsi.
