Mayor Halsema made a dramatic choice yesterday: to embrace a one-sided, historically false narrative over facts. In doing so, she chose to ignore the suffering of Israelis and Jews over the past 80 years. She omits the fact that the Jews accepted the 1947 UN partition plan while Arab leaders rejected it and launched a war to destroy the newborn Jewish state. Had they succeeded, the consequences for the Jewish population would have been catastrophic. No mention either of the 700,000 Jews expelled from Arab countries, decades of wars and terrorism against Israel, or the horrific Hamas attacks that triggered the war in Gaza. Presenting Israel as the sole villain may earn applause in some political hostile circles, but for the Mayor of Amsterdam to adopt such a narrative is irresponsible. It will only intensify hatred in an already explosive environment. Sadly, it is no surprise that members of the ancient Jewish community feel increasingly unsafe in the Netherlands, while antisemitic bullies feel emboldened to act.
