Abraham Lincoln was actually very unpopular among abolitionists when he ran for president. He was seen as too moderate and conciliatory towards the South, as he did not campaign to abolish slavery altogether, but merely prevent it in the Western territories. Lincoln was chosen as a compromise candidate because all of his competitors were seen as too radical (Seward, who was the John Brown candidate because he was pro-immigrant/pro-Catholic) or too conservative (Bates, who was a former Know-Nothing). Lincoln's opposition to slavery, even during the war, was tempered by political reality. There's a reason why the Emancipation Proclamation didn't happen until 1863, and why it excluded the slave states like Maryland that remained with the Union. The Proclamation was intended to reinvigorate Union morale and also make it morally untenable for Britain and France to continue supporting the Confederacy, since their populations were anti-slavery. Lincoln planned for reconciliation after the war's end, which is part of why the South surrendered. Most everyone knows that John Wilkes Booth was condemned across the South for assassinating Lincoln, and it was for precisely this reason: the war was over, the nation was coming back together, the South had capitulated with honor. Lincoln's death led to the Radical Republicans seizing control of the federal government, who imposed the maximal amount of pain they could on the South (contrary to LARPers who think the Union somehow went easy on them). And even then, the matter was settled and the nation reconciled within 20 years of the war ending. Americans should really be thankful we had men like Lincoln, Grant, Sherman, and Lee in the driver's seats. Our civil war was unlike pretty much every other civil war in world history. Your average civil war is an endless series of massacres and counter-massacres, guerrilla warfare, civilians being murdered in the dead of night, women being mass raped, scars that last for generations. Ireland's civil war lasted less than a year and was still poisoning their politics 50 years later. Spain is still litigating the legacy of THEIR civil war nearly a century after it ended. In contrast, the American Civil War was relatively clean. It consisted primarily of traditional military battles. Civilians were largely unharmed; even Sherman's March to the Sea was mild compared to what has gone on in other countries. The Union and Confederate armies largely treated one another with respect. And when the war ended, it ended, despite the Radical Republicans trying to inflame tensions. 30 years after Lee surrendered, dudes who had been shooting at each other at Gettysburg and Vicksburg were chumming it up over a beer and a cigar. That's American exceptionalism, right there.
