While protein powders are marketed as an easy health boost—especially for older adults or those with low appetites—Harvard Health Publishing warns they may come with hidden risks. A report from Harvard's Clean Label Project tested 134 protein powders and found many contained heavy metals like lead and arsenic, BPA from plastics, pesticides, and other harmful contaminants—sometimes in alarmingly high amounts. Because protein powders are classified as dietary supplements, the FDA does not regulate them as rigorously as food or drugs, meaning consumers may not know exactly what they’re ingesting.
