@jpwarchaeology Local newspapers may provide some info too. There are also returns of Bucks licensed premises in the Quarter Sessions which survive from 1753-1828. A few years have been indexed inc 1827. I thought I had it but can't readily find it - if I do I'll let you know the details.

@BucksResearch So far, it looks like they dropped down to mere beer retailers for a good while after 1863. Even by 1864 the Royal Standard isn't listed in the trade directories but various beer retailers at unknown premises are. Will try and cross-match those names with census data.

@BucksResearch That is so good of you. 1863! I might have a ferret around with the trade directories as well as they will likely offer some good corroboration of this data. At some point, I may do a Mythbusting article on this place and you will be credited with bells on 😁

@jpwarchaeology Thanks James, here's a transcript from the 1872 return with the key, original Bucks Archives ref Q/RLv/21. I don't think it got a spirit licence until the 1920s, the licensee was referenced as a mere beer house keeper in the 1921 census

@BucksResearch Cathy, that is BRILLIANT! Thanks so much for finding the archival reference to back up what I had always suspected. Do you have a link, scan, or reference to that document that I could keep on file?

It's also great to see that the #Thame Cottage Hospital records have now found their way to the archive - previously not know to survive. I located them after finding a list of the records from the 1970s in an archive's collection - and making a FOI request to an NHS Trust.

This is one of the nicest archives to work in. I’ve made progress tracing individuals in electoral registers and have taken the time to look a little bit at the Oxford Eye Hospital records for a congenital form of macular dystrophy, uniquely found in my ancestry. #FamilyHistory
